Women’s Genitalia (Aurat) in Prayer; A Best Explanation

Shariah Reference: Women’s Genitalia (Aurat) in Prayer ~ Hi all readers! In the previous article I explained about the male body part which must be closed and which may not be closed when he is praying. I also explained about the law. In this article I will explain the same thing but it is related to women. Actually, I have explained that in a number of previous articles, but only briefly. Now I will explain it again with more detailed information. The question is, what part of a woman’s body should be closed and which may not be closed when she is praying?

As always, before I answer the question above, I will quote a hadith that is specifically related to our discussion. Pay attention!

From Umm Salamah radliyallaahu anhaa, that in fact she once asked the Prophet (Muhammad) sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, “Are women allowed to pray using their clothes and khimar (head covering and neck)?” He replied, “(Yes) If her clothes are wide and can cover all of her body and the outside of her both legs.” The hadith is narrated by Abu Daud.

The Body of Muslim Women in Prayer That Must be Closed

Praying (Salat) With Carrying Baby

There are some important things related to the hadith above that we need to know;

One; The hadith explains that women must cover all their bodies when she is praying.

Two; The Shafiiyah sect and the Hanabilah sect argue, that women must cover all their bodies when she is praying, except the face and two palms. If her legs or her toes are open, then she must repeat the prayer.

Three; The Malikiyah sect argues that women must cover all her bodies except the chest and fingers (two legs and two hands). Closing the chest and fingers is not a requirement. If she prays in such conditions, then her prayer is still valid, but the two parts are better closed. That is, the law is makruh (it is better not to do it).

Four; Abu Hanifa and Muhammad said that women must cover all their bodies except the face, two palms, and two legs.

That is a brief explanation of women’s genitalia (aurat). Now, do you understand? The problem is simple and the explanation I have conveyed is very clear. So, I hope you understand! But, if you want to ask, please ask!

I think that is enough for this article. May be useful! Amen!

See you again in the next article!
