Specifically, there are five important things about “what is wudu in Islam?” which I will explain in this article. The five important things I mean are as follows:
The Literal Meaning of Wudu
The first important thing about “what is wudu in Islam?” what I will explain now is the literal meaning of wudu. I want you to understand that first before you read more explanations in this article because that is the basic thing in this discussion that must be well understood.
Specifically, we can find an explanation of the literal meaning of wudu in the explanation below:
Wudu in Arabic is clean and holy.
Now, if you ask me, “what is the literal meaning of wudu?”, the answer is clean and holy. That's the answer. That is the literal meaning of wudu.
That is a brief explanation of the literal meaning of wudu. As Muslims, we must understand that.
What Is Wudu in Islam?
The second important thing about “what is wudu in Islam?” what I will explain now is a specific explanation. So, I really hope you guys read the explanation below very well.
In simple terms, I want to say that we can find the meaning of wudu in Islam in the explanation below:
Wudu in Islam is the use of holy water on certain parts of the body that have been determined by Sharia. Some of the body parts in question are the face, two hands, head, and two feet, with the aim of removing all things that prevent a person from praying.
Now, if you ask me, "what is wudu in Islam?", the answer is "using holy water to wash some parts of the body and chanting some parts of the body to remove minor hadas that can prevent one from praying." That's the answer. That is wudu in Islam.
As for some parts of the body that must be washed in wudu are the face, two hands, and two feet.
While some parts of the body that must be rubbed in wudu are part of the head or part of the hair of the head and two ears.
That's a brief explanation of "what is wudu in Islam?". As Muslims, we must understand that.
Why Is Wudu in Islam Important?
The third important thing about “what is wudu in Islam?” what I will explain now is "why is wudu in Islam important?". I want you to understand that now because it is one of the important questions in this discussion that must be well understood.
If we read some Islamic legal literature on wudu, we will find three reasons why wudu is important in Islam:
- Since wudu is the most important way to get rid of minor hadas, the other way is Tayammum. We can find this explanation in various Islamic legal literatures. In other words, it is a common thing that the majority of Muslims already understand. So, I will not explain that again here.
- Because there are some acts of worship in Islam that require Muslims to have wudu or to be in a state of purity when doing it all. One of them is prayer. We can find this explanation in the hadith below:
From Abu Hurairah radiyallahu anhu, that the Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, "Allah does not accept someone's prayer from you if he has hadas (small hadas) until he performs wudu." This hadith was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
That is a brief explanation of "why is wudu in Islam important?". As Muslims, we must understand that.
The Virtues of Wudu in Islam
The fourth important thing about “what is wudu in Islam?” what I will explain now is the virtues of wudu in Islam. I want you to understand all of that now because these are some of the important things about wudu that Muslims must understand.
In simple terms, I would like to say that we can find an explanation of some of the virtues of wudu in the two hadiths below:
From Umar radliyallahu anhu, he said, "The Messenger of Allah alaihi wa sallam said, "It is not one of you who performs wudu then perfects it, then says, "I testify that there is no god but Allah who has no partner, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger," except the eight doors of Heaven have been opened for him. He can enter any door he wants." The hadith is narrated by Muslims and at-Tirmidhi. He (at-Tirmidhi) added another editor, "O Allah, make me among those who repent and make me including those who are cleansed."
From Abu Hurairah radliyallahu anhu, he said, "I have heard the The Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said," Verily my people on the Day of Judgment come with white light in all members of wudu (limbs washed and wiped in wudu) from the former wudu. Whoever of you can prolong his white light, then let him do that." The hadith is narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
- The first hadith explains that if Muslims complete their wudu and pray after wudu, then they can enter Paradise through whatever gates of Paradise they wish. In other words, wudu can erase prayer. That is one of the virtues of wudu.
- The second hadith explains that the virtue of wudu is as a sign that distinguishes the people of the Prophet Muhammad from the people of other prophets on that day. Prophet Muhammad would recognize his people by the white light emanating from their bodies. The white light will emit from the body that is washed and rubbed when they perform wudu.
That is a brief explanation of the virtues of wudu in Islam. As Muslims, we must understand that.
When Should You Perform Wudu?
The fifth important thing about “what is wudu in Islam?” what I will explain now is "when should you perform wudu?". I want you to understand that at the end of this discussion because so that you have a good understanding of wudu after reading this article.
Before I explain the answer to that question (when should you perform wudu?), I want to explain that wudu is the most important way to get rid of minor hadas. In Islam, there are several acts of worship that require Muslims to have wudu or to be in a holy condition when doing it all. One of them is prayer.
Now, if you ask me, “when should you perform wudu?”, the answer is “you should perform wudu when you have minor hadas and are about to perform an act of worship that requires you to be in a pure state.”
