Hadith About Utilizing Skins of Animal Carcasses

The hadith about utilizing skins of animal carcasses that I mean is as follows:

From Ibn Abbas radliyallahu anhu, he said, “The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, “If the skin has been tanned then it really has been holy.” The hadith is narrated by Muslim.

From Salamah bin al-Muhabbiq radliyallahu anhu, he said, “The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, “Tanning is the way to cleanse it.”

From Maimunah radliyallahu anha, she said, “The Prophet (Muhammad) sallallahu alaihi wa sallam once found the sheep they threw away. He said, “If only you took the skin.” They said, “Indeed the sheep were dead.” He said, “The al-Qaradh tree (acacia tree) can purify it.” The hadith is narrated by Abu Daud and an- Nasa’i.

If we look at some of the hadiths above, we must at least understand a number of things as follows:

  • The skin of the animal carcass is unclean but it can be cleansed by tanning.
  • Tanning is a way to remove moisture from the skin. Because that is a way to purify it.
  • Tanning can purify the outside and the inside of the skin, except the skin of dogs, pigs, and animals that are born from both breeds. That is because unclean things in these animals are very large (mughalladhah). That is the opinion of the Ash-Shafi’iyyah’s flow sect. As for the flow of al-Hanafiyah’s flow said, “The tanning can purify all the skin of the animal carcass, except the skin of the pig.” Al-Malikiyah’s flow said, “The tanning can purify all animal skin but on the outside of the skin, not the inside.” Al-Hanabilah’s flow said, “There is no animal skin that can be purified by tanning.”
  • Tanning can be done using the leaves of the acacia tree.
  • Must not waste property. If the asset can still be used, then we must use it.

The information above is information about how to use the skin of animal carcasses in Islamic teachings and some other information relating to the three hadiths. In the next I will explain briefly about those who convey the hadiths above.

The first hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas while the third hadith is narrated by Maimunah. If I don't forget, I have already explained the two people in the previous article. Please read! I will not discuss it again so that there is no repetition. The second hadith is narrated by Salamah bin al-Muhabbaiq. He is Rabi'ah bin Shakh al-Hudzaliy who is the father of Sanan al-Bashri. He has narrated 12 hadith.
