Umrah; Obligatory or not? ~ Hi all readers! In this article, I will explain the status of Umrah. The point is whether there is an Umrah worship that must be performed by all Muslims or not? The specifics are whether they are obligatory or not? As Muslims, we must know that. That’s why you should read this article to the end!

As usual, before I explain the status of Umrah, I will quote two hadiths that are specifically related to our discussion.

Hadith About Umrah

The two hadiths about Umrah that I mean are as follows;

From Jabir bin Abdillah radliyallahu ‘anhuma, he said, “There is a Bedouin who has come to the Prophet (Muhammad) sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam and said, “O Messenger of Allah, tell me about Umrah, is it obligatory or not?” He said, “No. But if you do Umrah, then it’s good for you.” The hadith was narrated by Ahmad and at-Tirmidhi.

Ibn ‘Addi narrated the hadith from another route from Jabir, “Hajj and Umrah are two obligations.”

All Readers! There are some important things about the above hadith that we must know;

First; The two hadiths above are the two hadiths that cause scholars of Islamic law to disagree about the status of Umrah; obligatory or not?

Second; Malik and Abu Hanifah said, that Umrah is a suggestion, not an obligation. The meaning is that if there is a Muslim who is able to do Umrah, then he is encouraged to do it.

Third; Ash-Shafi’I and Ahmad said, that Umrah is an obligation.
