Things that Requires Someone to Fast in Ramadan ~ Hi all readers! In a number of previous articles, I have explained briefly, that there are several conditions requiring a Muslim to fast. In this article, I will give a more detailed explanation of it all. As Muslims, of course, we must know about this.
We already know that there are 6 kinds of conditions that require a Muslim to fast;
First; anybody who will fast is Muslim.
This first point confirms that non-Muslims should not fast during Ramadan. Thus, we must not force non-Muslims to fast in the month of Ramadan. Even if he fasted in the month of Ramadan, even without force, then the fast he did was not valid.
Quran and Hadith About Things that Requires Someone to Fast in Ramadan
We can find this information in the word of Allah Taala;
قُلۡ أَنفِقُواْ طَوۡعًا أَوۡ كَرۡهٗا لَّن يُتَقَبَّلَ مِنكُمۡ إِنَّكُمۡ كُنتُمۡ قَوۡمٗا فَٰسِقِينَ ٥٣
Say: Spend willingly or unwillingly, it shall not be accepted from you; surely you are a transgressing people. (At-Taubah ; 53).
وَقَدِمۡنَآ إِلَىٰ مَا عَمِلُواْ مِنۡ عَمَلٖ فَجَعَلۡنَٰهُ هَبَآءٗ مَّنثُورًا ٢٣
And We will proceed to what they have done of deeds, so We shall render them as scattered floating dust. (Al-Furqaan ; 23).
Second; people who will fast should be adult.
This second point confirms that young children who are not yet adults are not obliged to fast in the month of Ramadan. This second point argument can be found in the following hadith;
عَنْ عَلِيٍّ بْنِ أَبيْ طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عَنْ ثَلَاثَةٍ : عَنِ الْمَجْنُوْنِ الْمَغْلُوْبِ عَلَى عَقْلِهِ حَتَّى يَفِيْقَ , وَعَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ , وَعَنِ الصَّبِيِّ حَتَّى يَحْتَلِمَ
From Ali ibn Abi Talib radiyallahu anhu from the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, “The pen was appointed from three people; from a madman whose wits are defeated until he is healed, from the person who sleeps until he wakes up, and from a child to an adult.”
Third; people who fast must be understanding.
This third point explain, that people who will fast must be able to distinguish between good and right. He must know that what is done is worship. He also had the intention to do that. We can find this statement in the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad as follows;
قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَاتِ وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى
The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said,” Indeed all deeds depend on their intentions and in fact every one of them has his own intention…”
Fourth; people who will fast must be able to do that.
This fourth point explains, that people who are unable to fast because of illness or others are not obliged to fast. We can find that information in the word of Allah Taala;
شَهۡرُ رَمَضَانَ ٱلَّذِيٓ أُنزِلَ فِيهِ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ هُدٗى لِّلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَٰتٖ مِّنَ ٱلۡهُدَىٰ وَٱلۡفُرۡقَانِۚ فَمَن شَهِدَ مِنكُمُ ٱلشَّهۡرَ فَلۡيَصُمۡهُۖ وَمَن كَانَ مَرِيضًا أَوۡ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٖ فَعِدَّةٞ مِّنۡ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَۗ يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ بِكُمُ ٱلۡيُسۡرَ وَلَا يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ ٱلۡعُسۡرَ وَلِتُكۡمِلُواْ ٱلۡعِدَّةَ وَلِتُكَبِّرُواْ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ مَا هَدَىٰكُمۡ وَلَعَلَّكُمۡ تَشۡكُرُونَ ١٨٥
The month of Ramadan is that in which the Quran was revealed, a guidance to men and clear proofs of the guidance and the distinction; therefore whoever of you is present in the month, he shall fast therein, and whoever is sick or upon a journey, then (he shall fast) a (like) number of other days; Allah desires ease for you, and He does not desire for you difficulty, and (He desires) that you should complete the number and that you should exalt the greatness of Allah for His having guided you and that you may give thanks. (Al-Baqarah ; 185).
