Talqin Mayit in Islam

Hi all readers! In this article, I will explain one important thing that must be done by Muslims after they buried janazah. The important thing I mean is talqin mayit in Islam. Talqin mayit is reading a few sentences on the grave of the dead person. The goal is for the person who has passed away or the body to hear and say it.

As usual, before I explain the talqin mayit in Islam, I will quote one hadith that is specifically related to our discussion.

Hadith About Talqin Mayit

The hadith about Talqin Mayit that I mean is as follows.

عَنْ ضَمْرَةَ بْنِ حَبِيْبٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَحَدِ التَّابِعِيْنَ قَالَ ؛ كَانُوْا يَسْتَحِبُّوْنَ إِذَا سُوِّي عَلَى الْمَيِّتِ قَبْرُهُ وَانْصَرَفَ النَّاسُ عَنْهُ أَنْ يُقَالَ عِنْدَ قَبْرِهِ ؛ يَا فُلَانُ قُلْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ، يَا فُلَانُ قُلْ رَبِّي اللهُ وَدِيْنِيْ الْإِسْلَامُ وَنَبِيِّيْ مُحَمَّدٌ . رَوَاهُ سَعِيْدٌ بْنُ مَنْصُوْرٍ

From Dlamrah bin Habib radliyallahu 'anhu, one of the Tabi'in, said, "If they (the companions of the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) have finished burying the person who has died and people have left him/her, they like to say a few sentences at the edge of his/her grave, "O fulan! Say it; there is no god but Allah!" [up to three times], "O fulan! Say it; My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, and my Prophet is Muhammad."" The hadith is narrated by Sa'id bin Mansur.

There are some important things about the above hadith that we need to know;

The hadith explains the suggestion of teaching the body a few sentences after he/she is buried.
The hadith explains, that in essence people who have died will live again in the grave.
The hadith explains, that the angels Munkar and Nakir will ask questions to people who have died after he/she was buried.
The content of talqin mayit in Islam is; O fulan! Say it; there is no god but Allah!" [up to three times], "O fulan! Say it; My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, and my Prophet is Muhammad."
