Understanding the Tahiyatul Masjid Prayer (Salat) ~ Hi all readers! In this article, I will explain the Tahiyatul Masjid prayer. The prayer is one type of prayer that is recommended, not an obligation. The purpose of the prayer is to honor the mosque as a house of Allah and a place of worship.

As always, before I explain Tahiyatul Masjid prayer (Salat) further, I will quote one hadith that is specifically related to our discussion. Pay attention!

Hadith About Tahiyatul Masjid Prayer

The hadith about Tahiyatul Masjid prayer that I mean is as follows:

From Abu Qatadah radliyallaahu anhu, he said, “Allah’s Messenger sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said, “If there is someone from you who enters the mosque, then let him not sit directly until he prays two rak’ahs.” The hadith is narrated by al- Bukhari and Muslim.

There are some important things related to the hadith above that we need to know;

One; The hadith above explains the advice of the tahyiatul masjid prayer (prayer to honor the mosque) for people who enter the mosque.

Two; Ash-Shafi’i said, that the tahiyatul masjid prayer is recommended at all times of prayer, even if during Friday prayer sermon, and even if someone enters the mosque repeatedly in one day; if he enters the mosque ten times a day, he is recommended to do it ten times.

Three; Malik said that the tahuyatul masjid prayer is not recommended at times forbidden to pray, even if it is not possible during Friday prayer sermon. If someone enters the mosque ten times in one day, if the distance between the first time of entry and the second time of entry is close, then he is sufficient to perform the tahiyatyl masjid prayer once. But if the distance is not close, he is encouraged to do it every time he enters the mosque.

Four; Abu Hanifah said, that the tahiyatul masjid prayer was not recommended at prohibited times and during Friday prayer sermon. One is only recommended to do it once a day, even though he repeatedly enters the mosque in one day.

Five; Ahmad said, tahiyatul masjid prayer is not recommended at prohibited times, before someone sits in the mosque.

Six; The above hadith explains, that someone should not immediately sit down before he performs the tahiyatul masjid prayer. The question is, does the suggestion lost if someone sits in the mosque?

Seven; Malik and Abu Hanifah said that the suggestion was not lost because it sat, even though it was long.

Eight; Ahmad said that the suggestion was not lost because it sat for a while, but the suggestion was lost if sitting for a long time.

Nine; Ash-Shafi’i said, if he sat because he forgot, then the recommendation is still valid, but if intentional, the suggestion is lost.

Prayer in Islam: Salat: Daily Prayers

The intention to pray for the mosque is as follows;

I intend to do the sunnah prayer (which is recommended), Tahiyatul Masjid, as many as two rakats, by facing the qiblah, because Allah Ta’ala. Allah is the Greatest.

That is a brief explanation of Tahiyatul Masjid prayer (Salat). Do you understand? If you want to ask, please ask!
