Solar Eclipse Prayer and Lunar Eclipse Prayer: Hi all readers! I’m sure we all know what solar eclipses and lunar eclipses are. Both are ordinary natural phenomena. But some people assume that both of them happened because something big happened or something big happened. That is wrong. And, in Islam, when both occur, then a Muslim is recommended to pray the sunnah. The sunnah prayer is called solar eclipse prayer and lunar eclipse prayer.
As usual, before I explain further about solar eclipse prayer and lunar eclipse prayer, I will quote one hadith that is specifically related to our discussion.
Hadith About Solar Eclipse Prayer and Lunar Eclipse Prayer
The hadith about solar eclipse prayer and lunar eclipse prayer as follows:
عَنِ الْمُغِيْرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : اِنْكَشَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُوْلِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ مَاتَ إِبْرَاهِيْمُ . فَقَالَ النَّاسُ : اِنْكَشَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ لِمَوْتِ إِبْرَاهِيْمَ . فَقَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللهِ لَا يَنْكَشِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلَا لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوْهُمَا , فَادْعُوْا اللهَ وَصَلُّوْا حَتَّى تَنْكَشِفَ . مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ
From al-Mughirah bin Syu’bah radliyallahu ‘anhu, he said, “There was a solar eclipse during the time of the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam on the day of Ibrahim’s death. People then said, “There has been a solar eclipse because of the death of Abraham.” The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said, “Verily the sun and moon are two signs of the signs of Allah’s greatness. Both of them did not experience an eclipse because of someone’s death and not because of one’s life. If you see both, then pray to Allah and pray until they become clear. “The hadith is narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
There are some important things related to the above hadith that we need to know;
One: The hadith explains the recommendation to pray because of the solar eclipse and the moon eclipse when the cause has occurred. Ash-Shafi’I said, “Eclipse prayer can be done at any time even though the time should not be used for prayer.” The majority of law enforcement experts said, “That eclipse prayer should not be done at a time that should not be used for prayer.”
Two: The hadith explains that the assumption about the occurrence of a lunar eclipse and solar eclipse due to someone’s death or because of the occurrence of a large phenomenon is a wrong assumption.
