Why Sleep Damage Ablution (Wudu)? ~ Hi all readers! In the articles in a number of previous articles, I have stated that sound sleep can break wudu. In this article, I will explain why this is so? As Muslims, we need to know the reason. Maybe someday we will be asked about that and we can answer it with the right answer.
As always, before I answer the question above and speak more about why sleep damage ablution (wudu), I will quote the hadith of Prophet Muhammad which specifically relates to our discussion.
Hadith About Why Sleep Damage Ablution (Wudu)?
The hadith about why sleep damage ablution (wudu) that I mean is as follows;
From Mu’awiyah radliyallahu ‘anhu, he said, “The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, “The eye is the anus. If two eyes have gone to sleep then the rope will be released.” The hadith is narrated by Ahmad and ath-Thabrani. He (ath-Thabrani) added (editors of hadith), “He who sleeps, let him ablaze (doing ablution or wudu).”
All readers! If we observe the hadith above, then we know that sleep can eliminate one’s consciousness. When he was unconscious, he did not know what had happened to him. In the hadith explained, that sleep is an anal cord. The point is, when a person sleeps, he or she will not be able to know what is entering the anus or which is diffused from his anus. We all know that fart can only come out of the anus. If we are in a state of wakefulness, not sleeping, when we want to fart, we can hold it or release it. It’s all our drowsiness. But it will be different when we sleep. When we sleep, we will not know whether we have farted or not. Because of that, in order to be careful, the Prophet Muhammad told us that we should ablaze if we wake up.
That is the answer and a brief description of the question above. But as we know, there are several kinds of positions for people to sleep; some sleep in a sitting position, supine position, prone position, or even in a standing position. Among the various types of positions, what sleep position that can break ablution (wudu)? Allah willing, I will answer this question in the next article.
The people who have narrated this hadith are Mu’awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan bin Shakhr bin Harb al-Umawiy who has the nickname Abu Abdirrahman. He entered Islam at the time of the conquest of the city of Mecca. He has narrated 130 hadith. He is a very smart and kind person. He died in 60 hijria when he was 78 years old.
That’s a brief explanation about why sleep damage ablution (wudu)? Do you understand? The problem is simple and the explanation that I have conveyed is also clear. So, I hope you understand.
I think that is enough for this article. May be useful! Amen!
See you again in the next article!
