The Meaning of “As-Sabil” in Quran about Hajj

Islamic Law Center: Hi all readers! In this article I will explain the meaning of “as-Sabil” in the Quran about Hajj. I think as Muslims we have heard that word. In language, the meaning of the word is “journey”. But what is meant by the journey in the verse? If you want to know the answer, then you should read this article until it finishes!

We can find the word “as-Sabil” or “Sabil” in the Qur’anic verse below;

In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it shall be safe. And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House – for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves – then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds. (Ali Imran [3]; 97).

There is also an explanation of the meaning of the word “as-Sabil” or “Sabil” in the hadith below;

From Anas radliyallahu ‘anhu, he said,” It has been said, “O Messenger of Allah, what is” as-Sabil “?” He said, “Provisions and vehicles.” The Hadith was narrated by ad-Daruquthni.

All Readers! In the hadith above explained that what is meant by “as-Sabil” or “Sabil” is “az-Zadu” and “ar-Rahilatu”. In short, the meaning of the word “az-zadu” is the provision that is needed by someone during his Hajj. While the meaning of the word “ar-Rahilatu” is a vehicle used to perform Hajj. These two things are the standard of the obligation to perform Hajj for a Muslim.

But there are some other important things about the above hadith that we must know;

First; that what is meant by “az-Zadu” is not just a provision that is needed by someone during his Hajj. The meaning of the word “az-zadu” also covers all the needs of the family in the house. That is, if you want to do Hajj, then you must have provisions for yourself and your family. You cannot leave your family in a condition they don’t have anything to eat and drink. That is the meaning of “az-Zadu” specifically.

Second; that what is meant by “ar-Rahilatu” is a condition for people who are far away from the place to perform Hajj, as if you are in America, Germany, France, Russia, Indonesia, and so forth.
