Understanding Prayer (Salat) in Islam

Islamic Shariah Online: Understanding Prayer (Salat) in Islam ~ Hi all readers! In some of the previous articles I have explained about several things related to prayer (salat). We already know what we have to do, which we should not do, and what we can do, when we will pray and when we are praying. There are many things that I have explained. In this article I will explain about the status of prayer in Islam.

As always, before I explain more about prayer (salat) in Islam, I will quote a number of verses from the Qur’an and some hadith related to our discussion. Pay attention!

And keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate and bow down with those who bow down. (Al-Baqarah [2]; 43).

Attend constantly to prayers and to the middle prayer and stand up truly obedient to Allah. (Al-Baqarah [2]; 238).

Recite that which has been revealed to you of the Book and keep up prayer; surely prayer keeps (one) away from indecency and evil, and certainly the remembrance of Allah is the greatest, and Allah knows what you do. (Al-‘Ankabuut [29]; 45).

Surely, I am Allah, there is no god but I, therefore serve Me and keep up prayer for My remembrance. (Ta Haa [20]; 14).

The Prophet (Muhammad) sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said, “I was ordered to pray five times every day.” The hadith is narrated by al-Bukhari.

The Prophet (Muhammad) sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said, “If a child is seven years old, then he must be ordered to pray. If he is ten years old (and he does not want to pray), then he must be beaten.” The hadith is narrated by Ahmad.

Allah’s Messenger sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said, “Verily the first servant’s count is counted on the Day of Judgment is his prayer. If the prayer is good, then he has been lucky and successful. But if it’s broken, then he has failed and lost.”

The Solution for Imperfect Prayer (Salat)

Actually, there are still many verses of the Qur’an and hadith which explain the prayer. I will not mention everything! What I have quoted above is enough to understand the status of prayer in Islam.

There are several important things related to some verses of the Qur’an and some of the hadith above;

One; The command to pray is in the Quran and hadith.

Two; Prayer that are done well can prevent people from doing them from bad deeds (Al-‘Ankabuut [29]; 45).

Three; The biggest purpose of prayer is to remember Allah (Ta Haa [20]; 14).

Four; Muslims must pray five times every day (Shubuh, Dhuhur, Asr, Maghrib, Isha’), except for people who have obstacles justified by Islam not to do so.

Five; A child who is seven years old must be taught to pray. Remember! He must always be ordered to pray at that age. If he doesn’t want to do it at the age of seven to nine years, then his parents can’t beat him. But if he is ten years old and he does not want to pray, he must be beaten. The punch in question is a blow to educate and not be on the face.

Six; Prayer is the first act that will count on the Day of Judgment. If someone’s prayer is good, then he will be safe.

All readers! If we have understood the brief explanation above, then of course we already know that prayer is one of the teachings and commands that are very important in Islam. That is because prayer can determine a person’s behavior when he lives in the world, in the end it becomes the first act that must be accounted for. In addition, prayer is an activity that must be carried out since childhood, because even though someone is only required to perform prayer five times every day, but in reality, it is a difficult activity.

That is a brief explanation of prayer (Salat) in Islam. May be useful! Amen!

I think that is enough for this article. See you again in the next article!
