Places That Cannot be Used for Prayer (Salat)

Islamic Rule Reference: Places That Cannot be Used for Prayer (Salat) ~ Hi all readers! In this article I will explain about places that should not be used for prayer. It is true, in some of the previous articles I have explained, that all the places on earth can be used as a place of prostration, a place for prayer. But that is a general explanation. There is special information detailing where prayer is not allowed.

As always, before I explain this theme, I will quote some of the hadith that are specifically related to this discussion. Pay attention!

From Abu Sa’id al-Khudri radliyallaahu ‘anhu, that the Prophet (Muhammad) sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said, “All the earth is a place of prostration except graves and bathrooms.” This hadith is narrated by at-Tirmidhi.

From Ibn Umar radliyallaahu ‘anhumaa, “That the Prophet (Muhammad) sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam had forbidden someone to pray in seven places; rubbish bins, slaughterhouses, highways, bathrooms, where the camel merendum is, and above Baitullah Ta’ala (Ka’bah).” The hadith is narrated by at-Tirmidhi.

There are some important things related to the hadith above that we need to know;

One; There are differences of opinion between experts on Islamic law about the prohibition of prayer in the cemetery. Ahmad said that prayers in graves should not be done. Abu Hanifah said that it was possible to do the prayer in the cemetery, whether in the cemetery or not. But the law is makruh (better not to be done. The Malikiyyah sect said that prayer may be done in the cemetery as long as it is not known that the place used is an unclean place. The law is not makruh. Shafi’i makes a ban; if the prayer is performed at the grave and the land are mixed with the dead man’s carcass, so the prayer is invalid, but if it is done in a holy place, then it can be done.

Two; Ash-Shafi’i and Abu Hanifah argued that prayer may be done in the bathroom if the place used is not unclean, but it is better not to do it (makruh). Malik said that it could be done in the bathroom if the place used was not unclean. The law is not chaotic. Ahmad said that prayer should not be done in the bathroom.

Three; The reason for the prohibition of prayer in the slaughter of animals and trash is because the two places were unclean.

Four; The reason for the prohibition of prayer in the place of the camel is because something in that place can damage the prayer.

Five; The reason for the prohibition of prayer on the Ka’bah is because the person praying on it is not facing the qiblah.

Six; The reason for the prohibition of prayer on the highway is because it can disturb people who walk.

That is a brief explanation of places that cannot be used for prayer (salat). Now, do you understand? The problem is simple and the explanation I have conveyed is very clear. So, I hope you understand. But if you want to ask, please ask!

I think that is enough for this article. May be useful! Amen!

See you again in the next article!
