Types of Obligatory Fasting that Muslim Must Know

Islamic Law On Website: Types of Obligatory Fasting that Muslim Must Know ~ Hi all! In this article I will explain the types of fasting. In the previous article I said, fasting in the month of Ramadan is mandatory. But there are many obligatory fasts besides fasting in Ramadan. That is what I will say now.

As Muslims we must know that there are three types of obligatory fasting. We must know that there are three types of obligatory fasting;

First; fasting in Ramadan.

I have already discussed this subject before. In addition, we can see information about the obligation of this fast in the word of Allah Taala;

O you who believe! fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may guard (against evil) [183] For a certain number of days; but whoever among you is sick or on a journey, then (he shall fast) a (like) number of other days; and those who are not able to do it may effect a redemption by feeding a poor man; so whoever does good spontaneously it is better for him; and that you fast is better for you if you know [184]. (Al-Baqarah [2]; 183-184).

Second; fasting whose status is a punishment because someone has committed a violation. The types of violations are as follows;

One; Because someone cannot perform the duties of the Hajj perfectly. Allah Taala said;

And accomplish the pilgrimage and the visit for Allah, but if, you are prevented, (send) whatever offering is easy to obtain, and do not shave your heads until the offering reaches its destination; but whoever among you is sick or has an ailment of the head, he (should effect) a compensation by fasting or alms or sacrificing, then when you are secure, whoever profits by combining the visit with the pilgrimage (should take) what offering is easy to obtain; but he who cannot find (any offering) should fast for three days during the pilgrimage and for seven days when you return; these (make) ten (days) complete; this is for him whose family is not present in the Sacred Mosque, and be careful (of your duty) to Allah, and know that Allah is severe in requiting (evil). (Al-Baqarah [2]; 196).

Two; Because someone does not find an animal that can be slaughtered when someone wants to pay for the offense he has committed when he is performing hajj. The amount of fasting that must be done is 3 days he must do when he is still doing the Hajj and seven days after he returns from the Hajj. The total is ten days.

Three; If someone accidentally killed another person and he did not find a slave to be freed, then he had to fast fasting for two consecutive months. We can find information about that in the word of Allah Taala;

And it does not behoove a believer to kill a believer except by mistake, and whoever kills a believer by mistake, he should free a believing slave, and blood-money should be paid to his people unless they remit it as alms; but if he be from a tribe hostile to you and he is a believer, the freeing of a believing slave (suffices), and if he is from a tribe between whom and you there is a convenant, the blood-money should be paid to his people along with the freeing of a believing slave; but he who cannot find (a slave) should fast for two months successively: a penance from Allah, and Allah is Knowing, Wise. (An-Nisaa’ [4]; 92).

Four; Because someone has violated his own oath. He must fast for 3 days.

For example, if someone has sworn and he damages his oath, then he must feed 10 poor people, that is, from the food you usually give to his family, or he gives clothes to them or frees a slave. If he can’t do that, then he must fast for three days for breaking oaths. We can find such information in the word of Allah Taala;

Allah does not call you to account for what is vain in your oaths, but He calls you to account for the making of deliberate oaths; so its expiation is the feeding of ten poor men out of the middling (food) you feed your families with, or their clothing, or the freeing of a neck; but whosoever cannot find (means) then fasting for three days; this is the expiation of your oaths when you swear; and guard your oaths. Thus, does Allah make clear to you His communications, that you may be Fateful. (Al-Maa’idah [5]; 89).

Five; Because someone has killed an animal when he was doing the Hajj. So, if he does not get the same animal to be copied. We can find this information in the word of Allah Taala;

O you who believe! do not kill game while you are on pilgrimage, and whoever among you shall kill it intentionally, the compensation (of it) is the like of what he killed, from the cattle, as two just persons among you shall judge, as an offering to be brought to the Kaaba or the expiation (of it) is the feeding of the poor or the equivalent of it in fasting, that he may taste the unwholesome result of his deed; Allah has pardoned what is gone by; and whoever returns (to it), Allah will inflict retribution on him; and Allah is Mighty, Lord of Retribution. (Al-Maa’idah [5]; 95).

Six; Because someone has violated Dhihar Oath. And even then, if he did not find slaves to be freed as the main ransom. We can find this information in the word of Allah Taala;

And (as for) those who put away their wives by likening their backs to the backs of their mothers then would recall what they said, they should free a captive before they touch each other; to that you are admonished (to conform); and Allah is Aware of what you do [3] But whoever has not the means, let him fast for two months successively before they touch each other; then as for him who is not able, let him feed sixty needy ones; that is in order that you may have faith in Allah and His Messenger, and these are Allah´s limits, and the unbelievers shall have a painful punishment [4]. (Al-Mujaadalah [58]; 3-4).

Seven; Because someone has had sex during the daytime during the month of Ramadan.

Sex is one of the restrictions that must be known by a Muslim who is fasting in the month of Ramadan. So, if there is a Muslim who has sex with his wife during the day in the month of Ramadan, then he has to fast for two consecutive months.

Third; fasting is obligatory because someone has promised that he will fast. We can find this explanation in the following hadith;

From Aisha radliyallahu anha that the Prophet (Muhammad) sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, “He who promises to obey Allah, then he will obey Him. Whoever promises to commit to God, then let him not commit to him.”

That is the explanation of types of obligatory fasting that Muslim must know. Do you understand? The problem is simple and the explanation that I have conveyed is also clear. So, I hope you understand. But if you don’t understand, please ask!

That’s enough for this article. May be useful! Amen!

See you again in the next article!
