Mechanism of Tayamum

Hi all readers! In the previous article, I explained about Tayamum as a solution to purify the body if we do not find water. Well, in this article I will explain the mechanism of Tayamum. As Muslims, we must know about this, because the mechanism is very different from the mechanism of ablution (wudu) and bathing.

As always, before I speak further about mechanism of Tayamum, I will quote some hadith that are specifically related to our discussion. Pay attention!

Hadith About Mechanism of Tayamum

The hadith about mechanism of Tayamum that I mean is as follows:

From ‘Ammar bin Yasir radliyallaahu anhumaa, he said, “The Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam has sent for a purpose. I then junub and found no water. I then rolled on a plateau like an animal. Then I went to the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallah and told him that. He then said, “Surely you just have to do this with your hands.” Then he clapped his hands on the earth once. Then he rubbed his left hand on his right hand, the outside of his palm, and his face.” The hadith is narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.

In the history of al-Bukhari explained, “And he tapped the palms of his hands on the earth and then blew (dust) in the two palms of his hands. Then he rubbed his face and his palms with both of his hands.”

From Ibn Umar radliyallaahu ‘anhumaa, he said, “Allah’s Messenger sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam once said, “Tayamum is two pats. One part for the face and one pat for both hands until both elbows.” The hadith is narrated by ad-Daruquthni.

There are a number of things we need to know about some of the hadith above;

One; From the first hadith we can conclude, that Islam prohibits us from insulting someone who has tried to be good, even though he failed.

Two; Malik and Ahmad said that the body that must be rubbed in Tayamum is the face and two palms. Ash-Shafi’I in his new opinion and Ahmad said that the body that must be rubbed in Tayamum is the face and two hands to two elbows.

Three; The person who is in the junub (in impurity), if he does not find water, then he must do Tayamum as explained above. He did not need to roll or rub dust on all of his body.

Four; After we put our palms together on dust or sand, we must shake both of them before rubbing them both over the face and hands.

Five; One hand clap on the earth for the face and one more clap for both hands. We must not use one pat to wipe the face and two hands.

Six; Ash-Shafi’I said that we must wipe our faces first and then we rub our hands. Abu Hanifah and Malik said the sequence did not a requirement Tayamum for small hadas, such as urination, farting, etc., but it was a requirement for large hadas, such as after sex and sperm discharge.

All readers! That is a brief explanation of mechanism of Tayamum. If you have questions, please ask!

I think that is enough for this article. May be useful! Amen!

See you again in the next article!
