The Literal Meaning of Tahiyatul Masjid

Specifically, the sentence "Tahiyatul Masjid" is an Arabic sentence. The writing is الْمَسْجِدِ. If we examine the sentence, we will find two words: "Tahiyat (تَحِيَّةُ)" and "Masjid or al-Masjid (الْمَسْجِدِ)".
Literally, the meaning of the word "Tahiyat (تَحِيَّةُ)" is respect. While the meaning of the word "Masjid or al-Masjid (الْمَسْجِدِ)" is a place of prostration. But what is meant by "Masjid or al-Masjid (الْمَسْجِدِ)" in this discussion is the mosque as we have understood it as a place of prayer.

Tahiyatul Masjid in Islamic Law

In other words, I want you to have a complete understanding of it.
If we read some Islamic legal literacy about Tahiyatul Masjid, then we will find an explanation that Tahiyatul Masjid is one of the terms of sunnah prayer in Islam. Thus, we can call it the Tahiyatul Masjid prayer.
In Islam, the Tahiyatul Masjid prayer is a sunnah prayer performed in respect the mosque. So, it is one way to respect the mosque. As for some other ways to respect the mosque is to keep the mosque clean, praying in the mosque, reading the Quran, Salawat, Istighfar, Dhikr in the mosque, and so on.

عَنْ أَبِيْ قَتَادَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ ؛ قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ؛ إِذَا دَخَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ الْمَسْجِدَ فَلَا يَجْلِسْ حَتَّى يُصَلِّيَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ . مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ
From Abu Qatadah radliyallahu anhu, he said, "The Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, "If anyone of you enters the mosque, then let him not sit down until he prays two rak'ahs." This hadith was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
So, in Islam, respect for the mosque should not be done in arbitrary ways. There are special rules for that as I have explained in the previous few paragraphs.
