All Readers! If we understand the explanation of the definition of marriage above, then of course we already understand what the meaning of marriage. Islam has arranged everything about it. I will explain that in several articles with the following, Allah willing.

Basics of Marriage in Islam

Now I want to explain the basics of marriage in Islam. We can find these basics in the Quran and hadith. Surely Quran and hadith become the main reference for all Muslims in their lives.

Basics of Marriage in Quran

Actually, there are many verses of Quran that describe marriage. But I will only quote the following two verses;

And if you fear that you cannot act equitably towards orphans, then marry such women as seem good to you, two and three and four; but if you fear that you will not do justice (between them), then (marry) only one or what your right hands possess; this is more proper, that you may not deviate from the right course. (An-Nisa’ [4]; 3).

And marry those among you who are single and those who are fit among your male slaves and your female slaves; if they are needy, Allah will make them free from want out of His grace; and Allah is Ample-giving, Knowing. (An-Nur [24]; 32).

Basics of Marriage in Hadith

There are many hadiths that explain marriage. I will not quote everything. I will quote a very popular hadith. The hadith I mean is as follows;

From Ibn Mas’ud Radliyallahu ‘anhu, he said, “The messenger of Allah sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said to us, “O young people, anyone of you who can have sex, then he must get married. Indeed it (marriage) is better able to keep eye sight and better able to maintain vital organs. Anyone who can’t, then he must fast because it actually suppresses the desire to have sex.”

An explanation of Marriage in Hadith

There are some important things about marriage in the hadith above that I want to explain.

First; O young people

Readers, the question I want to say is, why is the context addressed by the Prophet Muhammad to young people, not everyone in general?

The answer is simple; because young people have a very big sex lust. That is very different from the sexual lust of small children or even parents. But what we need to know is, that in fact the context in the hadith is general, not only for youth, even the elderly as well.

Second; the ability to have sex (الباءة).

Actually, the word (الباءة) has many meanings. The first meaning is the ability to provide wedding expenses, such as homes and daily necessities. The second meaning is the ability to have sex (not impotent).

For me, the most appropriate meaning is the ability to have sex (not impotent). Why? If we pay attention to the next sentence in the hadith above (أغض للبصر وأحصن للفرج), then we will find the correlation. The point is that a married couple can keep their eye sight from things that can arouse lust. They are also better able to protect their vital organs from adultery.

Why is that, of course because a married couple can have sex as they wish as long as it does not violate Islamic rules.

All Readers! That was a short explanation of the theme of this article. May be useful! Amen!

See you in the next article!
