Made Vinegar from Khamr According to Islam

Islamic Shariah Online: Made Vinegar from Khamr According to Islam ~ Hi all readers! In this article I will explain about the law of making vinegar from khamr (a drink that can make someone become drunk). There are two important things that we must pay close attention to here. First, vinegar. As we know that vinegar is a type of liquid that is mostly used for cooking. In Islamic teachings the law is halal. That is, it can be consumed. Second, khamr. This Khamr can make someone drunk. Islamic teachings say that it should not be consumed. Quran also expressly forbids us to drink it. Allah Taala said;

O you who believe! intoxicants and games of chance and (sacrificing to) stones set up and (dividing by) arrows are only an uncleanness, the Shaitan’s work; shun it therefore that you may be successful. (Al-Maaidah [5]; 90).

The question then is, can we make vinegar using khamr? What is the explanation of Islam about that?

To answer the two questions above, I will present the hadith of Prophet Muhammad below;

From Anas bin Malik radliyallahu anhu, he said, “The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam was once asked about khamr, “Can it be used to make vinegar?” “He replied, “No.” The hadith was narrated by Muslim.

All readers! If we observe the hadith above, we know that the khamr must not be used to make vinegar. That is because the original law for khamr is haram. Illegal items must not be used to make things. That is the general view of the hadith above and the problems presented in this article.

But there are some important things related to the hadith above and this issue that we must pay attention to;

One; We must not process khamr into vinegar. Besides that, Khamr will not turn into sacred even though it is processed into vinegar. This is the opinion of Ash-Shafi’I and Ahmad.

Two; The original status of khamr (unclean) can change to be sacred if it is processed into vinegar, because khamr which is unclean status changes into a sacred liquid. This is the famous opinion of Malik and the opinion of Abu Hanifah.

Three; All Islamic law experts agree, that if khamr turns into khamr by itself, without one’s intervention, then it changes to be holy.

The three points that I mentioned above are a summary of the differences of opinion among Islamic law experts about khamr if processed into vinegar. Now it depends on who we want to choose. That’s our absolute right. If we have chosen one opinion, then we must hold that opinion and respect other people who have different opinions. We must not blame others who disagree with us.

Do you understand? I hope you understand, because actually the problem presented in this article is very simple. The explanation that I convey is also very clear.

I think that is enough for this article about made vinegar from Khamr according to Islam. May be useful! Amen!

See you again in the next article!
