The Tahiyatul Masjid prayer is a Sunnah prayer that is performed in honor of the mosque. The prayer must be performed in the mosque. So, if we go to the mosque to perform the Maghrib prayer, when we have just arrived at the mosque, we are encouraged to perform the Sunnah prayer.

We can find an explanation that the Tahiyatul Masjid prayer is one of the Sunnah prayers in Islam in the hadith below:

From Abu Qatadah radliyallahu anhu, he said, "The Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said, "If anyone of you enters the mosque, then let him not sit down until he prays two rakats." This hadith was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
