The Meaning of Sunnah to Talk While Eating

The first important thing about “is it sunnah to talk while eating?” What I will explain now is the meaning of the phrase “talk while eating”. I want you to understand that so that you have a complete understanding of the focus of our discussion.

If we look at the sentence “it is sunnah to talk while eating”, then we will understand that there are two points that we must understand. The two points I mean are as follows:

One: Sunnah.

By the way, do you know what sunnah is? If you don’t know about it, then you should remember that sunnah is everything that is attributed to Prophet Muhammad. That is an explanation of what the sunnah is in general.

The specific meaning of the sunnah is as follows:

Everything that is narrated from the Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, such as sayings, deeds, decisions, attributes of creation and ethics, either before he was sent as a Prophet and Messenger or after that.

That is one of the definitions of sunnah according to hadith experts.

You can find an explanation of the sunnah in the hadith below:

Whoever sets an example of good habits in Islam, then he will get his reward and the reward of those who imitate it, without reducing their reward in the slightest. And whoever sets an example of a bad habit, then he will get his sin, and the sin of those who follow him without reducing their sin in the slightest.

Two: talk while eating.

As for what is meant by “talk while eating” is very simple, that someone talks while eating.

So, we can understand “talk while eating” in several ways as follows:

One: that the Prophet Muhammad used to talk while eating.

Two: that talking while eating is one of the good things in Islam.

But, in general, if we find someone explaining the sunnah to talk while eating, then it means that the Prophet Muhammad used to do that and that is a good thing in Islam. The second important point about “sunnah to talk while eating?” what I will explain now is the hadith about talking while eating. I want you to understand that so that you understand the basic arguments to answer the question.

The hadith about sunnah to talk while eating is as follows:

It was narrated from Jabir bin Abdillah that the Prophet (Muhammad) asked his family for side dishes, and his family replied: “We have nothing but vinegar.” He also asked for vinegar and he ate it with (a mixture of) vinegar, then he said: “The best side dish is vinegar, the best side dish is vinegar.”
