- Hadith About Tahajjud Prayer.
- Is It Necessary to Sleep Before Tahajjud Prayer?
Meaning of Tahajjud
The first important thing about “is it necessary to sleep before Tahajjud prayer?” what I will explain now is the meaning of Tahajjud. I want you to understand that first before you read more explanations in this article because it is a basic thing in any discussion about Tahajjud prayer that must be well understood.
Tahajjud is an Arabic word. The writing is التَّهَجُّدُ. If we read some Islamic literacy, we will find some meanings of Tahajjud (التَّهَجُّدُ) as follows:
Tahajjud is a sunnah prayer at night after sleeping.
Some of meanings of Tahajjud Tahajjud (التَّهَجُّدُ) are: (first) sleeping then praying then sleeping again then praying again, (second) praying after sleeping, (third), praying after Isha prayer.
All readers! If we read a few paragraphs above, we will find many meanings of Tahajjud (التَّهَجُّدُ). But if we read some Islamic literacy, we will find an explanation that the most valid meaning of Tahajjud (التَّهَجُّدُ) is sunnah prayer at night after sleeping.
That is a brief explanation of the meaning of Tahajjud. As Muslims, we must understand that.
Quran About Tahajjud Prayer
The second important thing about “is it necessary to sleep before Tahajjud prayer?” what I will explain now is Quran about Tahajjud prayer. I want you to understand that now because it is one of the important things in this discussion that must be well understood.
As for the Quran about Tahajjud prayer what I mean is as follows:
And from [part of] the night, pray with it as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station. (Al-Isra’ : 79).
All readers! If we understand the Quranic verse about Tahajjud prayer above, we can conclude several things as follows:
One: Tahajjud prayer is one of Sunnah prayers in Islam.
Two: Tahajjud prayer is performed at night.
That is a brief explanation of Quran about Tahajjud prayer. As Muslims, we must understand that.
Hadith About Tahajjud Prayer
The third important thing about “is it necessary to sleep before Tahajjud prayer?” what I will explain now is hadith about Tahajjud prayer. I want you to understand that now because it is one of the important things in this discussion that must be well understood.
There are many hadiths about Tahajjud prayer. Of course, I’m not going to explain all of that now. In this article, I will only quote four hadiths.
The four hadiths about Tahajjud prayer are as follows:
Allah’s Messenger (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “The best of people are servants of Allah, if he prays at night, after that he does not sleep at night except for a short time.”
The above hadith explains the recommendation to perform Tahajjud prayer. A Muslim who performs Tahajjud prayer is a good Muslim because he worships his Lord when many people are sleeping.
It was narrated from Abu Umamah al-Bahili radliyallahu anhu, from the Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam, he said, “Do Qiyamyul Lail (by doing Tahajud prayer) continuously, because it is the habit of the pious people before you. Qiyamul Lail (by doing Tahajjud prayer) is your worship to your Lord, removing various faults and preventing sins.” This hadith was narrated by al-Hakim.
The above hadith explains some of the virtues of Tahajjud prayer: pious people before Prophet Muhammad was sent as a Prophet and Messenger of Allah performed Tahajjud prayer, Tahajjud prayer is one of the sunnah worship, Tahajjud prayer can remove sins, and Tahajjud prayer can prevent someone from committing sins.
From Ibn Abbas radliyallahu anhuma, he said, “The prayer of Prophet (Muhammad) sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam was thirteen rakats (meaning he prayed at night).”
The above hadith describes the number of rakats that Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did at night, that he performed thirteen rakats. We can assume that he performed twelve rakats for Tahajjud prayer and one rakat for Witr prayer.
Abdullah bin Umar radliyallahu anhuma said, “Someone asked Allah’s Messenger (Prophet Muhammad), “How to do the night prayer?” He said, “Two rakats, two rakats. If you are worried that you will not be able to perform the Fajr prayer (because of that), then do the Witr prayer with one rakat.”
The above hadith explains how to perform Tahajjud prayer. Tahajjud prayer is performed every two rakats. The point is that we have to do Salaam after we have performed two rakats for Tahajjud prayer. Two rakats is the minimum rakats for Tahajjud prayer.
That is a brief explanation of hadith about Tahajjud prayer. As Muslims, we must understand that.
