Specifically, there are three important points about “is it haram to show a little bit of hair?” which I will explain in this article. The three important things I mean are as follows:

What Does Hijab Mean in Islam?

The first important thing about “is it haram to show a little bit of hair?” what I will explain now is “what does hijab mean in Islam?”. I want you to understand that first before you read more explanations in this article because that is one of the basic things in this discussion that must be well understood.

“Hijab” is an Arabic word. The writing is حِجَابٌ. It means a barrier. So, linguistically, hijab is something that blocks one thing from another.

Linguistically, we can find the meaning of the word "hijab" in the Quran below:

O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted for a meal, without awaiting its readiness. But when you are invited, then enter; and when you have eaten, disperse without seeking to remain for conversation. Indeed, that [behavior] was troubling the Prophet, and he is shy of [dismissing] you. But Allah is not shy of the truth. And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts. And it is not [conceivable or lawful] for you to harm the Messenger of Allah or to marry his wives after him, ever. Indeed, that would be in the sight of Allah an enormity. (Al-Ahzab [33]; 53).

In general, one understands hijab in Islam as a head covering, like a veil. One of its functions is to cover the head. In Islam, the hijab is synonymous with Muslim women. Why? Because in Islamic law, a woman's genitals are all her body except the two palms and the face.

In Islam, hijab is very important for Muslim women. Some sects in Islam argue that Muslim women are obliged to wear the hijab to cover their heads. There is a difference of opinion on that. I'm not going to explain that now.

That is a brief explanation of “what does hijab mean in Islam?”. As Muslims, we must understand that.

At What Age Do Muslim Women Wear Hijab?

The second important thing about “is it haram to show a little bit of hair?” What I will explain now is "at what age do Muslim women wear hijab?". I want you to understand that because it is one of the important things in this discussion that must be well understood. In addition, there are some Muslims who do not understand it well.

One important thing that you must understand is that the discussion about "at what age do Muslim women wear the hijab?" related to the minimum age a Muslim must pray. In general, we understand that Muslims should pray when they are adults (baligh). But the discussion about "hijab" which is our topic now is analogous to the command to teach young children to pray.

If we read the Islamic legal literature on the commandment to teach young children to pray, then we will find several hadiths that explain that parents should teach their children to pray at the age of seven. And they were ordered to beat their children who did not pray at the age of ten.

Some of the hadiths I mean are as follows:

From Abu Tsariyyah, Sabrah bin Ma'bad al-Jahni radliyallahu anhu, he said, "The Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, "Teach children to pray (salat) when they are seven years old and beat them if they do not pray (salat) by the time they are ten."

From Amru bin Shuaib, from his father, from his grandfather radliyallahu anhu, he said, "The Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, "Order your children to pray (salat) when they are seven years old. Hit them if they do not pray (salat) when they are ten years old. And separate their beds."

So, if we compare the minimum age for Muslims to wear the hijab when it comes to teaching children to pray, we can conclude that Muslims are encouraged to wear the hijab at the age of 7 years. That's the answer.

That is a brief explanation of "at what age do Muslim women wear hijab?". As Muslims, we must understand that.

Is It Haram to Show a Little Bit of Hair?

The third important thing about “is it haram to show a little bit of hair?” what I'm going to explain now is a specific answer. I want you to understand that well. So, you should read the explanation below very well.

In the previous few paragraphs, I have said that there are differences of opinion about the obligation of hijab for Muslim women. The difference of opinion explains that there are differences of opinion regarding the obligation to cover hair for Muslim women; that according to some Muslim jurists Muslim women are allowed to show all their hair and according to others Muslim jurists are not allowed to show their hair.

Thus, this discussion does not focus on the opinion of some Islamic legal experts who allow Muslim women not to wear the hijab, but on the opinion of some Islamic law experts who require Muslim women to wear the hijab to cover their aurat, especially their hair.

Now, “is it haram to show a little bit of hair?”

To be honest, I have not found a specific explanation in Islamic legal literacy about it. So, I will make an analogy with the discussion about "is it OK to show little hair in prayer for Muslim women?".

According to the Shafi'i school, the part of the aurat that is visible at the time of salat, be it a little or a lot, including a small amount of women's hair, is something that break salat. So, she is obliged to do salat again because the salat that she has been invalid.

While the Hanbali school (Ahmad ibn Hanbal school) or the Hanafi school (Abu Hanifah school), there is a difference between the visible aurat a little or a lot. If the aurat is visible only a little, then it does not break salat. But if the aurat is seen a lot, then it breaks salat.

Thus, we can conclude two things as follows:

  1. If we make an analogy with the opinion of the Shafi'i school, we can conclude that Muslim women should not show a little hair with the hijab.
  2. If we make an analogy with the opinions of the Hanbali school and the Hanafi school, we can conclude that Muslim women are allowed to show a little hair with the hijab.

All readers! That's a brief explanation of "is it haram to show a little bit of hair?" and some important things about it. Do you understand? If you want to ask, please ask!

I think that's enough for this article. Hope it is useful. Amen.

See you again in the next article!
