Is Cat Unclean Like a Dog? ~ Hi all readers! In this article, I will discuss cats. This animal is one of the animals that we often meet, either because we keep it or because in our neighborhood there are many wild cat communities. The question then arises; is this animal like a dog? That is, is it unclean?

As always, before I answer the question above and speak more about is cat unclean like a dog?, I will quote the hadith related to our discussion.

Hadith About Cat and Dog

The hadith about cat and dog that I mean is as follows:

عَنْ أَبِيْ قَتَادَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : فِيْ الْهِرَّةِ : إِنَّهَا لَيْسَتْ بِنَجَسٍ ، إِنَّمَا هِيَ مِنَ الطَّوَافِيْنَ عَلَيْكُمْ . أَخْرَجَهُ الْأَرْبَعَةُ وَ إِبْنُ خُزَيْمَةَ

From Abu Qatadah radliyallahu ‘anhu, he (Prophet Muhammad) said about cats; indeed, it is not unclean. That includes the animals that surround you. The hadith is narrated by four people (Abu Daud, at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa’I, and Ibn Majah) and Ibn Khuzaimah.

Well, do you understand? The cat is not unclean. So, for example, it drinks water or eats food, then the water and food are not unclean. Likewise, if it licks objects. It’s different with dogs!

You need to know, that the Prophet Muhammad said the hadith because at one time Abu Qatadah gave a dog a drink. That was then conveyed to the Prophet Muhammad. He then said the hadith above.

There are several things that can be understood from the above hadith, including;

One; People who do not know a problem must ask people who know. In the context of the hadith above Abu Qatadah asked the Prophet Muhammad about the status of the dog.

Two; We must be friendly to animals. If we are only required to be friendly to animals, then that obligation is increasingly binding on us when we interact with fellow humans. This is one proof of Islamic humanism.

Three; Cat and food or drinks that have been drunk and eaten by cat are sacred.
