The first important thing about “is Abdullah one of the 99 names of Allah?” what I will explain now is literal meaning of Abdullah. I want you to understand that first before you read more explanations in this article because that is the basic thing in this discussion that must be well understood.

Abdullah is an Arabic sentence. The writing is عَبْدُ اللهِ. So, there are two words is the sentence: Abdu or عَبْدُ and Allah or اللهِ.

If we read the Quran, we will find explanations that Abdullah’s sentence (عَبْدُ اللهِ) has been mentioned several times specifically. Take a look at the two Quranic verses below:

قَالَ اِنِّيْ عَبْدُ اللّٰهِ ۗاٰتٰنِيَ الْكِتٰبَ وَجَعَلَنِيْ نَبِيًّا ۙ

[Jesus] said, “Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet. (Maryam [19]: 30).

وَّاَنَّهٗ لَمَّا قَامَ عَبْدُ اللّٰهِ يَدْعُوْهُ كَادُوْا يَكُوْنُوْنَ عَلَيْهِ لِبَدًاۗ ࣖ

And that when the Servant of Allah stood up supplicating Him, they almost became about him a compacted mass.” (Al-Jinn [72]: 19).

That is a brief explanation of literal meaning of Abdullah. As Muslims, we must understand that.

Can You Name Your Child Abdullah?

The second important thing about “is Abdullah one of the 99 names of Allah?” what I will explain now is “can you name your child Abdullah?”. I want you to understand that now because it is one of the important questions in this discussion that must be well understood.

Before I give you the answer to that question (can you name your child Abdullah?), I will explain one important thing that you must always keep in mind if you want to give your child a name. That the name to be given to the child is a name that has a good meaning. The reason is because a name is a prayer. The goal is for the child to get good. So, we should not name our children with names that have a bad meaning or names that have been owned by bad people in Islamic history, such as Tabbat (woe to!) Pharaoh, Abu Lahab, Dajjal, and so on.

So, if we understand everything I have explained above, especially the literal meaning of Abdullah (عَبْدُ اللهِ), we can conclude that you can name your child Abdullah. Here’s the answer.

By the way, do you remember who was the father of Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam?

In case you forgot, Prophet Muhammad’s father was Abdullah. So, Abdullah is one very good name for a child.

That’s a brief explanation of “can you name your child Abdullah?”. As Muslims, we must understand that.
