Hi all readers! Are you looking for an explanation of intention for Tahajjud prayer? If your answer is “Yes”, congratulations! Now you are reading the right article. Why? Because that is what I will explain in this article. As Muslims, we must understand that. That’s why I wrote this article. So, you should read it to the end!
Specifically, there are three important things about intention for Tahajjud prayer which I will explain in this article. The three important things I mean are as follows:
- What Is Intention in Islam?
- Why Do You Have to Say Intention for Tahajjud Prayer?
- Intention for Tahajjud Prayer.
What Is Intention in Islam?
The first important thing about intention for Tahajjud prayer that I will explain now is “what is intention in Islam?”. I want you to understand that before you read any further explanations in this article because it is one of the important questions in this discussion which should be well understood.
Before I explain about “what is intention in Islam?”, I want to say that the intention in Arabic is Niyyat. I will quote a hadith that is specifically related to the question. The hadith I mean is as follows:
From Umar radliyallahu anhu, that the Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, “Action depends on his intention (niyyat), and a person only gets something according to his intention. Whoever emigrated to Allah and His Messenger, then his emigration was to Allah and His Messenger, and whoever emigrated for the sake of the world or because of the woman he wanted to marry, then his emigration was according to where he migrated.”
All readers! If we understand the hadith above, we can conclude that “intention in Islam” is the intention or purpose of an action. That is what distinguishes one action from another. In Islam, everything depends on intention. If the intention is good, then the deed is good. If the intention is bad, then the action is bad.
That is a brief explanation of “what is intention in Islam?”. As Muslims, we must understand that.
Why Do You Have to Say Intention for Tahajjud Prayer?
The second important thing about intention forTahajjud prayer that I will explain now is “why do you have to say intention for Tahajjud prayer?”. I want you to understand that now so that you understand the urgency of this discussion. There are some Muslims who do not understand that well.
In the previous few paragraphs, I have explained that intention in Islam is the intention or purpose of action. That is what distinguishes one action from another. That is the basic explanation of “intention” that you must understand.
Now, if you ask me, “why do you have to say intention for Tahajjud prayer?”, the answer is to explain your point, that the prayer you are going to do is Tahajjud prayer, not Witr prayer, the repentance prayer, Fajr prayer, Isha prayer, and so on. so on.
In Islam, intention for each prayer is different. Intention for Tahajjud prayer is different from intention for Witr prayer. Intention for Fajr prayer is different from intention for Isha prayer. Intention for Janazah prayer is different from intention for Zuhr prayer. Intention for Zuhr prayer is different from intention for Asr prayer. Intention for Qabliyah prayer is different from intention for Badiyah prayer. Intention for lunar eclipse prayer is different from intention for solar eclipse prayer. Intention for Duha prayer is different from intention for repentance prayer, and so on. As Muslims, we must understand that.
That’s a brief explanation of “why do you have to say intention for Tahajjud prayer?”. As Muslims, we must understand that.

Intention for Tahajjud Prayer
The third important point about intention for Tahajjud prayer which I will explain now is the specific answer. So, I really hope you read the explanation below very well.
We can find an explanation of the recommendation for Tahajjud prayer for Muslims in the Quran and hadith below:
And from [part of] the night, pray with it as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station. (Al-Isra’ [79).
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah radiyallahu anhu. He said, “Prophet Muhammad was asked, ‘What is the best prayer after the Maktubah prayer (obligatory prayer) and what fast is the best after fasting in the month of Ramadan? the night and the most important fast after fasting during Ramadan is fasting during Allah’s month, Muharam’.” This hadith was narrated by Muslim.
It was narrated from Abu Umamah al-Bahili radliyallahu anhu, from the Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, he said, “Do Qiyamyul Lail (by doing Tahajud prayer) continuously, because it is the habit of the pious people before you. Qiyamul Lail (by doing Tahajjud prayer) is your worship to your Lord, removing various faults and preventing sins.” This hadith was narrated by al-Hakim.
The intention for Tahajjud prayer is as follows:
I intend to perform the Sunnah Tahajjud prayer, two rakats, by facing Qibla, because of Allah Taala.
You have to say intention for Tahajjud prayer when you perform Takbir Ihram. After that you have to do all the obligations in prayer, such as reading surah al-Fatihah, bowing, I’tidal, prostration, sitting between two prostration, Tashahhud, reading shalawat, Salaam, and so on.
That’s a brief explanation of intention for Tahajjud prayer and some important things about it. Do you understand? If you want to ask, please ask!
I think that’s enough for this article. May be useful. Amen.
See you again in the next article!
