The Position of Imam in Janazah Prayer

Shariah Studies: Hi all readers! I am sure we already understand, that Janazah prayer cannot be done like ordinary prayers. There are many things that distinguish it all, including the position of imam in Janazah prayer. That’s why I wrote this article. This is very important. As Muslims we must understand that.

As usual, before I explain the position of imam in Janazah prayer further, I will quote one hadith that is specifically related to our discussion. The hadith I mean is as follows;

From Samrah bin Janbad Radliyallahu ‘anhu, he said, “I once prayed behind the Prophet (Muhammad) sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam for women who had died in the postpartum period. She stood in the middle of the woman.” The hadith is narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.

There are some important things about the hadith that we need to know;

One; The hadith explains about the obligation of Janazah prayer for women who have died, both women died in a puerperal period (nifas), menstruation, and so forth.

Two; The hadith explains about the position of imam in Janazah prayer; the imam stands beside the body of the female body and next to the head of the male body.

Three; There are differences of opinion among Islamic legal experts. Ash-Sahfi’I, Ahmad, and Abu Yusuf said that imam was recommended to stand beside the female body (right next to the middle body) and the male head’s side. The famous opinion of the Hanafiyah sect says that imam must stand next to the chest of the male and female janazah. Malik said, that imam must stand next to the male janazah (right next to the middle body) and next to the shoulder of the female janazah.

All Readers! That is the difference of opinion about the position of imam in Janazah prayer. Now, do you understand? If you want to ask, please ask!

I think that’s enough for this article. May be useful! Amen!

See you in the next article!
