There are two important points about how to repent for Zina which I will explain here. First: why repent for Zina. Second: the steps of repentance for Zina. In the second discussion, there are six points that I will explain.

Specifically, the discussion on how to repent for Zina in this article is as follows:

Why Is Repenting for Zina Important?

If a Muslim asks you, "Why is repenting for Zina important?", Then the answer is because Zina is one of the major sins according to Islam. All sins, especially big sins, must be erased. The way to remove it is to repent. So, specifically, the sins resulting for Zina should be removed by repenting because it will have a very bad effect on both the person who has done it.

Actually, in several articles about Zina that I have written and which I have published on this website, several reasons why Zina is a big sin have been explained. One of them is the Quran below:

وَلا تَقْرَبُوا الزِّنَى إِنَّهُ كَانَ فَاحِشَةً وَسَاءَ سَبِيلاً

And don't you approach Zina. Truly it is a very abominable bandage and a bad road. (Al-Isra 17:32).

So, simply, I want to say again, that Zina is one of the great sins according to Islam. That is why repenting for Zina is important for those who have done it.

Steps of Repent for Zina

If a Muslim asks you, "What are the steps of repentance for Zina?", Then the answer is to realize that Zina is a big sin, regret Zina that has been committed, swear never to do Zina, pray Taubat, read Istighfar, and recite Salawat. The total is six steps.

One important thing about the steps to repent for Zina that I want to explain here, that there may be some experts in Islamic law who say that there are some other steps that must be done to repent for Zina. But the point is not to commit Zina again and ask Allah for forgiveness. The six steps of repentance for Zina that I have mentioned and which I will explain are several stages, from the very first stage to the most recommended stage, so that repentance carried out is accepted by Allah.

The explanation of the six steps of repentance for Zina is as follows:

You Must Realize That Zina Is a Big Sin

The first step to repent for Zina is to realize that Zina is a big sin. You have to realize it with logic and heart. What this means is that your logic and your heart must realize that Zina is a big sin that should not be committed because it will have bad consequences for you.

Maybe now you are wondering, "Why is it important to recognize Zina as a big sin?". If you ask like that, then the answer is because without awareness of it, then you will find it difficult to do the other stages of repentance for Zina. In fact, it is very possible that you will fail to repent for Zina.

You Must Regret Zina

The second step to repent for Zina is to repent for Zina. You have to do it mindfully. You must really regret that. Without it, it is very likely that you will commit Zina again.

Maybe now you are wondering, "Why is regretting Zina important?". Of course, the answer is because regret is one of the important factors that can prevent someone from doing the same thing. That's why repenting for Zina is very important in the series of repentance for Zina.

You Must Swear Never to Commit Zina Again

The third step to repent for Zina is to swear never to commit Zina again. An oath is a statement that is spoken sincerely by witnessing to God (Allah) or things that are considered holy. So, if you swear not to commit Zina again, then you are saying it seriously by witnessing to Allah.

One important thing about the oath of abstinence that I want to make clear here is that it doesn't have to be done in front of a large crowd. So, you just have to do that alone by witnessing Allah. Other people don't have to know you did it because it would be a disgrace.

You Have to Perform Prayer Repentance

The fourth step to repent for Zina is to pray Repentance. Repentance Prayer is one type of prayer that is recommended. Its main purpose is to wash away sin. So, the Prayer of Repentance is one of the best ways to erase all types of sins, including sins due to Zina.

In several previous articles, I have explained the Repentance prayer and how to do it. I won't explain that now. If you want to know about it, then please look for it on this website.

You Must Read Istighfar Often

The fifth step to repent for Zina is to read Istighfar. As Muslims, of course, we already understand that Istighfar is the best prayer and dhikr to wash away sins. The editorial of Istighfar is to ask Allah for forgiveness. For this reason, I highly recommend reading Istighfar as one of the best steps to repent for Zina.

You Must Read Salawat Often

The sixth step to repent for Zina is to read Salawat. It is true, in general, Salawat is a prayer for the Prophet Muhammad. But, as Muslims, we must know that one of the virtues of reading Salawat is to wash away sins. For this reason, I highly recommend reading Salawat as one of the best steps to repent for Zina. So, you should read as much Salawat as possible, especially on Fridays.

Why on Friday? Note some of the hadiths about the virtues of reading Salawat on Friday below:

قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَيَّ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ أَلْفَ مَرَّةٍ لَمْ يَمُتْ حَتَّى يَرَى مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ الْجَنَّةِ

The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, "Whoever reads Salawat to me on Friday a thousand times, he will not die until he sees his place in Heaven."

From Abu Dzarr radliyallahu anhu, he said, "The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said,"Whoever reads Salawat to me on Friday, all his sins which he has committed for two hundred years will be forgiven."

From Abu Hurairah radliyallahu anhu, he said, "The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, "Reading Salawat to me is the light above the Shirath (bridge to Heaven). Whoever reads Salawat to me on Friday eighty times, Allah will forgive all his sins which he has committed for eighty years."
