Wet Dreams in Islam

The first important thing about “how to clean wet dreams in Islam?” what I will explain now is wet dreams in Islam. I want you to understand that first before you read more explanations in this article because that is the basic thing in this discussion that must be understood well.

In Arabic, wet dreams are إِحْتِلَامٌ or الْإِحْتِلَامُ. Wet dreams are dreams of having sex until someone releases sperm. Both men and women experience it. In general, wet dreams in Islam are a condition that explains that a person has grown up (Baligh). In addition, a Muslim who has a wet dream until he releases sperm, then he has a big hadas. Thus, he must take a bath.

There are many explanations about wet dreams in Islam. One of them is that wet dreams are a sign that a Muslim has grown up or is Baligh. The mature Muslim (Baligh) is obliged to perform all the obligations in Islam, such as performing the obligatory prayers five times a day, paying Zakat, fasting during Ramadan, and performing Hajj if he is able to do so. Moreover, in one case, if the Muslims have a wet dream, then they are not allowed to perform some of the obligatory and recommended acts of worship before they bathe Janabah.

In the previous few sentences, I have explained that wet dreams (إِحْتِلَامٌ or الْإِحْتِلَامُ) are dreams of having sex with other people. Maybe the other person is a husband, wife, brother, sister, boy friend, girl friend, and so on.

In general, if under normal conditions, not in a dream, having sex with someone else, other than with a husband or wife, can make a person sin. It falls into the Zina category. But if it is done in a dream (wet dream), then it will not make a person sin. Why?

The answer is because dreams are a part of sleep. Whatever bad deeds we do during sleep or during dreams will not be considered a sin. We can find this explanation in the hadith below:

عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ , عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , قَالَ : رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عَنْ ثَلَاثَةٍ : عَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ ، وَعَنِ الصَّبِيِّ حَتَّى يَحْتَلِمَ ، وَعَنِ الْمَجْنُوْنِ حّتَى يَعْقِلَ

From Ali radiyallahu anhu, from the Prophet (Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he said, "The pen (recorder of deeds) will be lifted from three people: from the one who sleeps until he wakes up, from the child until he grows up (Balig), from the crazy person until he wakes up."

That's a brief explanation of wet dreams in Islam. As Muslims, we must understand that.

Is Ghusl Required After a Wet Dream?

The second important thing about “how to clean wet dreams in Islam?” what I will explain now is "is ghusl required after a wet dream?". I want you to understand that now because it is one of the important questions in this topic of discussion that must be well understood.

In the previous few paragraphs, I have explained that if Muslims have a wet dream, they must perform ghusl before they perform some worship that requires them to be in a holy condition. Ghusl I mean ghusl Janabah.

But what we must understand is that a wet dream that requires ghusl is a wet dream that causes sperm to come out. If Muslims have a wet dream and their sperm comes out, they must perform ghusl Janabah. If their sperm does not come out, they are not obliged to perform ghusl Janabah.

We can find this explanation in the hadith below:

عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، أُمِّ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا: أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ : جَاءَتْ أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ- اِمْرَأَةُ أَبِيْ طَلْحَةَ- إِلَى رَسُوْلِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَتْ : يَا رَسُوْلَ اللهِ ، إِنَّ اللهَ لَا يَسْتَحْيِي مِنَ الْحَقِّ ؛ هَلْ عَلَى الْمَرْأَةِ مِنْ غُسْلٍ إِذَا هِيَ اِحْتَلَمَتْ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: نَعَمْ، إِذَا رَأَتِ الْمَاءَ

From Umm Salamah, Ummul Mukminin, radliyallahu anha, that she said, "Umm Sulaym, the wife of Abu Talha, has come to the Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. She then said, "O Messenger of Allah, verily Allah is not ashamed of the truth: should a woman take a bath if she has had wet dreams?" The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, "Yes if he has seen the water (her sperm comes out).

عَنْ أَبِيْ سَعِيْدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : الْمَاءُ بِالْمَاءِ . رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ

From Abu Sa'id al-Khudri radliyallaahu anhu, he said, "Allah's Messenger sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said, "Water from water." The hadith is narrated by Muslim.
