Doing Witr Prayer
Hi all readers! Are you looking for an explanation of “how do you pray Witr prayer?”? If your answer is “Yes”, congratulations! Now you are reading the right article. Why? Because that is what I will explain in this article. As Muslims, we must understand that. That's why I wrote this article. So, you should read it to the end!
Specifically, there are three important things about “how do you pray Witr prayer?” which I will explain in this article. The three important things I mean are as follows:
Obligations in the Witr Prayer
The first important thing about “how do you pray Witr prayer?” what I will explain now is the obligations in the Witr prayer. I want you to understand all of that because these are some of the important things about Witr prayer that must be understood properly.
One important thing that you must understand is that the discussion of obligations in the Witr prayer is a discussion of obligations in prayer. So, we have to understand the obligations in prayer if we want to understand the obligations in the Witr prayer.
In general, if we read some Islamic legal literature on obligations in prayer or obligations in the Witr prayer, we will find fourteen obligations in prayer or obligations in Witr prayer.
The fourteen obligations in the prayer or in the Witr prayer that I mean are as follows:
- Niyyah for prayer.
- Stand up for those who can do it.
- Takbir Ihram.
- Read surah al-Fatihah.
- Bowing (Rukuk).
- I'tidal.
- Prostrate twice (sujud twice).
- Sit between the two prostrations.
- Final tashahhud.
- Read the final tashahhud prayer.
- Reading salawat when doing the final tashahhud.
- Salaam.
- Perform all obligations in prayer with Thuma'ninah (calmly).
- Perform all obligations in prayer regularly.
Those are the fourteen obligations in prayer. We have to do it all in the Witr prayer. If we do not perform one of the obligations in the Witr prayer for some reason, such as because we forgot, we must perform Sujud Sahwi. Sujud Sahwi is a prostration that is done because of forgetfulness in prayer. In several previous articles, I have explained a few things about it. So, I will not explain that again in this article
That is a brief explanation of the obligations in the Witr prayer. As Muslims, we must understand all of this.
How Do You Pray Witr Prayer?
The second important thing about “how do you pray Witr prayer?” what I'm going to explain now is a specific answer. So, I hope you guys read the explanation below very well.
In general, there are things we should do before the Witr prayer which are things we should do during the Witr prayer. The specifications are as follows:
- Purifying the body from minor and major hadas.
Absolutely, we must purify our bodies from small and large hadas. We have to do that because we have to do the Witr prayer in a holy condition. We can remove minor hadas with wudu or tayammum. We can get rid of major hadas by bathing in Janabah.
- Wear holy clothes.
Absolutely, we must wear holy clothes during the Witr prayer. There should be no najis on our clothes while we pray because it will spoil the Witr prayer that we do.
- Choose a holy place to perform the Witr prayer.
Performing Witr prayer in a holy place is one of our obligations. That's why we have to choose a holy place to pray Witr.
- Perform all the obligations in the Witr prayer. In the previous few paragraphs, I have explained the fourteen obligations in the Witr prayer. We have to do it all so that the Witr prayer we do is valid.
That's a brief explanation of "how do you pray Witr prayer?". As Muslims, we must understand that.
Niyyah for praying 1 Rakat Witr, 3 Rakat Witr, 5 Rakat Witr, and 7 Rakat Witr
The third important thing about “how do you pray Witr prayer?” what I will explain now is niyyah for praying 1 rakat Witr, 3 rakat Witr, 5 rakat Witr, and 7 rakat Witr. I want you to understand all of that because these are some of the important things about Witr prayer that must be understood very well.
Witr prayer is a sunnah prayer that can be done with various odd rakats. We can do that with 1 rakat, 3 rakat, 5 rakat, and so on. We can find this explanation in the hadith below:
From Abu Ayyub al-Ansari radliyallahu anhu, that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, "Witr prayer is the obligation of every Muslim. Whoever likes the five rakats, then he will do it. Whoever likes three rakats, then let him do. Anyone who likes one rakat, then let him do." The hadith is narrated by four people except at-Tirmidhi (Abu Daud, an-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah).
Unfortunately, not all Muslims understand the niyyah for praying 1 rakat Witr, 3 rakat Witr, 5 rakat Witr, 7 rakat Witr, and so on. That's why I want to explain how to do it all to you.
In simple terms, I want to say that if we want to pray 3 rakat Witr, 5 rakat Witr, 7 rakat Witr, and so on, we have to do it several times. We can't do it all at once.
If we want to pray 3 rakat Witr, we have to do 2 rakat Witr first. After that we do 1 rakat Witr. If we want to do 5 rakat Witr, we have to do 2 rakat Witr twice first. After that we do 1 rakat Witr. If we want to do 7 rakat Witr, we have to do 2 rakat Witr three times first. After that we do 1 rakat Witr, and so on.
So, what you have to understand is niyyah for praying 2 rakat Witr and niyyah for 1 rakat Witr because the mechanism for praying Witr is like that.
The niyyah for praying 2 rakat Witr is as follows:
أُصَلِّيْ سُنَّةً مِنَ الْوِتْرِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ مُسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةِ لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى
I intend to do part of Witr, the sunnah prayer, two rakats, by facing the qiblah, because of Allah Taala.
The niyyah for praying 1 rakat Witr is as follows:
أُصَلِّيْ سُنَّةً الْوِتْرِ رَكْعَةً مُسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةِ لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى
I intend to do the sunnah Witr prayer, one rakat, by facing the qiblah, because of Allah Taala.
That is a brief explanation of niyyah for praying 1 rakat Witr, 3 rakat Witr, 5 rakat Witr, and 7 rakat Witr. As Muslims, we must understand that.
All readers! That's a brief explanation of "how do you pray Witr prayer?" and some important things about it. Do you understand? If you want to ask, please ask!
