Holding Small Cough When Someone is Praying (Salat) ~ Hi all readers! In this article, I will explain the law of holding small cough when someone is praying. I think we have heard someone hold his small cough when he is praying, or even we have done it ourselves. The problem is, can it damage prayer (salat)?

As always, before I answer the question above, I will quote a hadith that is specifically related to our discussion.

Hadith About Holding Small Cough During Prayer (Salat)

The hadith holding small cough during prayer (salat) that I mean is as follow;

From Ali radliyallaahu anhu, he said, “I have two times to meet the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam. I once met him when he was praying and he hold his small cough to me. “The hadith is narrated by an-Nasa’i.

All readers! The above hadith explains that Ali bin Abi Talib used to meet the Prophet Muhammad. That’s a natural thing because Ali bin Abi Talib was his close family. One day Abi bin Abi Talib met him who was praying. He then he holds his small cough to signal Ali bin Abi Talib, that he was praying.

Thus, if someone hold his small cough when he is praying (salat), then it doesn’t matter. It can’t damage prayer.

There are some important things related to the hadith above that we need to know;

One; Holding small cough is one way that can be used to signal when someone is praying. The above hadith explains that the Prophet Muhammad did that.

Two; Even though holding small cough can be used to give a signal, but reading tasbih sentences is best way.
