عَنْ أَبِيْ هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : … دَخَلَتِ امْرَأَةٌ النَّارَ فِيْ هِرَّةٍ ربَطَتْهَا فَلَا هِيَ أَطْعَمَتْهَا وَلَا هِيَ أَرْسَلَتْها تَأكُلُ مِنْ خَشَاشِ الْأَرْضِ حَتَّى مَاتَتْ

From Abu Hurairah radiyallahu anhu, that the Prophet (Muhammad) sallallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, "…a woman enters Hell because she binds a cat and does not feed it nor does she let it go so that can eat small animals that are on the ground until it (the cat) dies."

In the above hadith it is explained that there was a woman who tortured a cat. The cat was tied up and not fed until the cat died. That's why the woman went to Hell.

If we understand the hadith on cats above, we can conclude several things as follows:

1. We must not torture any animal.
2. People who torture animals will go to Hell.
3. Islam really loves all creatures.

Hadith That Explains That Cats Are Not Unclean

The second important thing about the hadith on cats that I will explain now is the Hadith that explains that cats are not unclean. I want you to understand that now because there are some people who think cats are unclean animals.

If we read some Islamic legal literature, we will find an explanation that cats are not unclean animals. So, we can hold the cat.

We can find this explanation in the hadith below:

عَنْ أَبِيْ قَتَادَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : فِيْ الْهِرَّةِ : إِنَّهَا لَيْسَتْ بِنَجَسٍ ، إِنَّمَا هِيَ مِنَ الطَّوَافِيْنَ عَلَيْكُمْ . أَخْرَجَهُ الْأَرْبَعَةُ وَ إِبْنُ خُزَيْمَةَ

From Abu Qatadah radiyallahu anhu, he (Prophet Muhammad) said about cats; “Actually, it is not unclean. That includes the animals that surround you.” The hadith was narrated by four people (Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa'I, and Ibn Majah) and Ibn Khuzaimah.

All readers! If we understand the hadith above, we can conclude several things as follows:

1. Cats are not unclean animals as I explained earlier.
2. Cats are one of the animals that are not unclean and roam around us.
3. We can keep a cat on condition that we really have to take good care of it.

Hadith on Cat Saliva in Islamic Law

The third important thing about the hadith on cats that I will explain now is the hadith on cat saliva in Islamic law. I want you to understand that now because it is one of the important things about cats in Islam that must be well understood.

عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ خَارِجَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : خَطَبَنَا رَسُوْلُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِمِنَى وَهُوَ عَلَى رَاحِلَتِهِ وَلُعَابُهَا يَسِيْلُ عَلَى كَتِفِيْ . أَخْرَجَهُ أَحْمَدُ وَالتِّرْمِذِيُّ

From Umar bin Kharijah radiyallahu anhu, he said, "The Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam once addressed us in Mina. He was on top of the animal that became his vehicle. The animal's saliva dripped down my shoulder." The hadith was narrated by Ahmad and at-Tirmidhi.

All readers! In the above hadith it is explained that the saliva of animals whose meat can be eaten is sacred. What is meant by animals whose meat can be eaten are sacred animals. The legal status of the saliva also includes the law of sweat. That is with a note that the fluid does not come from the stomach, it may come from the skin or mouth.

In the previous few paragraphs, I have explained that cats are sacred or not unclean animals. So, we can conclude that cat saliva is not unclean.
