There is a difference of opinion among Islamic historians as to the reason why the ninth day of the month Dhu al-Hijjah is called the day of Arafah:

First: that when the Prophet Adam and Eve had descended to earth, they separated. Then they met that day at Arafah.

Second: because Wuquf in Arafah on that day.

Third: because the Prophet Adam and Eve met on that day on Mount Arafat after they had been separated for so long.

Four: because on that day Prophet Ibrahim understood that his dream was true. The dream I mean is a dream that ordered Prophet Ibrahim to slaughter his son. And so forth.

In Islam, the day of Arafah has many virtues. We can find one of the virtues of the day of Arafah in the hadith below:

مَا مِنْ يَوْمٍ أَفْضَلُ عِنْدَ اللهِ مِنْ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ يَنْزِلُ اللهُ إلَى السَّمَاءِ الدُّنْيَا فَيُبَاهِي بِأَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ أَهْلَ السَّمَاءِ

There is no day that is more important according to Allah than the day of Arafah. (On the day of Arafah) Allah descended into the heavens of the world and made the inhabitants of the earth proud of the inhabitants of the heavens.
