Five Things That Can Break Our Wudu in Islamic Law

The important thing about “does makeup break wudu?” what I will explain now is five things that can break our wudu in Islamic law. I want you to understand all of that first because they are some of the important things in this discussion that must be understood properly.

In simple terms, I want to say that there are five things that can break wudu:

  • One: if something comes out of two holes: the front hole (penis and vagina) and the back hole (anus).

We can find this explanation in the Quranic verse below:

O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of janabah, then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful. (Al-Maidah: 6).
  • Two: loss of mind due to sleep, madness, and so on.

We can find this explanation in the hadith below:

From Mu'awiyah radiyallahu anhu, he said, "The Messenger of Allah sallallhu alaihi wa sallam said, "The eye is the anal cord. If two eyes have slept then the string will be untied." The hadith was narrated by Ahmad and ath-Thabrani. He (ath-Thabrani) added (the hadith editor), "Whoever has been sleeping, let him perform wudu."
  • Three: if the skin of a man and a woman who is not a mahram touch each other without a barrier.

We can find this explanation in the following Quranic verse:

Or you touch a girl. (Al-Maidah: 6).
  • Four: touching the human penis, vagina, or anus using the palms of the hands or the inside of the fingers.

We can find this explanation in the hadith below:

Whoever holds his penis, let him perform wudu.

  • Five: vomiting and nosebleeds.

We can find this explanation in the hadith below:

From Aisha radiyallahu anha, that the Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alaihi wa sallam has said, "Whoever is exposed to vomiting, nosebleeds (blood coming from the nose), qalas (fluid that comes from the throat that fills the mouth or other things but it is not vomit) or madhiy, then he should perform wudu and then continue his prayer as long as he does not speak." This hadith was narrated by Ibn Majah.

That is a brief explanation of five things that can break our wudu in Islamic law. As Muslims, we must understand it.

Does Makeup Break Wudu?

The important thing about “does makeup break wudu?” what I'm going to explain now is a specific answer. So, I really hope you guys read the explanation below very well.

In the previous few paragraphs, I have explained six things that can break wudu. If we understand these six things, we can conclude that makeup does not break wudu unless there are unclean things in the makeup or if the makeup is made of something unclean, such as feces, pigs, dogs, and so on.

So, the conclusion is that if the makeup is made of something sacred, the makeup does not break wudu. That's the answer.

That's a brief explanation of "does makeup break wudu?". As Muslims, we must understand it.

How Do You Do Wudu with Makeup?

The important thing about “does makeup break wudu?” what I will explain now is “how do you do wudu with makeup?”. I want you to understand that at the end of this discussion because it is one of the important questions in this article that must be well understood.

Before I explain about "how do you do wudu with makeup?", I will quote a hadith that explains the obligations in wudu. The goal is for you to understand what you have to do during wudu. The hadith I mean is as follows:

From Hamran, that Uthman performed wudu. He washed his palms three times. Then he rinsed his mouth, put a little water in his nose and let the water out of his nose. Then he washed his face three times. Then he washed his right hand up to the elbow three times. Then his left hand is like that (like his right hand). Then he rubbed his head. Then he washed his right foot up to the ankle three times. Then his left leg like that. then he said, "I have seen the Messenger of Allah sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam performing wudu like this wudu." This hadith was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.

All readers! If we read the hadith above, then we will understand that the obligations in wudu are to apply wudu water on some bodies that must be rubbed and pour wudu water on some bodies that must be washed. It all will not be done if there is something blocking the water to the skin.

The bodies that must be washed in wudu are the face, the hands up to the elbows, and the soles of the feet up to the ankles. While some of the body that must be rubbed is part of the hair on the head and two ears.

So, if you ask me, “how do you do wudu with makeup?”, the answer is to do all the obligations in wudu as explained in the previous few paragraphs.

But there is one important thing that you must understand if you want to perform wudu with makeup. One important thing I mean is that there are two types of makeup:

  • One: makeup that has thickness and forms layers.

Makeup that has thickness and forms layers must be removed before a Muslim performs wudu. The reason is because the makeup blocks water from reaching the skin.

  • Two: makeup that has no thickness and doesn't form a layer.

Makeup that does not have thickness and does not form a layer may not be removed before a Muslim performs wudu. The reason is because the makeup does not block water from reaching the skin.

Maybe now you are wondering, “Why does thick layered makeup have to be removed before wudu?” The answer is because a Muslim must ensure that the water he uses for wudu reaches his skin.

That's a brief explanation of “how do you do wudu with makeup?”. As Muslims, we must understand it.

All readers! That's a brief explanation of "does makeup break wudu?" and some important things about it. Do you understand? If you want to ask, please ask!

I think that's enough for this article. May be useful. Amen.

See you again in the next article!
