First important thing about “do you have wudu if you fall asleep?” what I will explain now is “does feeling sleeping break wudu?”. I want you to understand that because it is one of the important questions on the topic we are discussing now.

Before I explain more about “does feeling sleeping break wudu?”, I’ll explain a few things that can spoil wudu. I want you to understand these as standard knowledge about things that spoil wudu.

In short, there are six things that can break wudu:

One: if something comes out of two holes: the front opening (penis and vagina) and the back hole (anus).

We can find this explanation in the following Quranic verse:

أَوْ جَاءَ أَحَدٌ مِنْكُمْ مِنَ الْغَائِطِ

Or one of you has come from the bathroom. (Al-Maidah: 6).

Two: loss of mind due to sleep, madness, and so on.

We can find this explanation in the hadith below:

فَمَنْ نَامَ فَلْيَتَوَضَّأْ

Whoever sleeps, let him perform wudu.

Three: if the skin of a man and a woman who is not a mahram touch without a barrier.

We can find this explanation in the following Quranic verse:

أَوْ لَامَسْتُمُ النِّسَاءَ

Or you touch a girl. (Al-Maidah: 6).

Four: touching the human penis, vagina, or anus using the palms of the hands or the inside of the fingers.

We can find this explanation in the hadith below:

مَنْ مَسَّ ذَكَرَهُ فَلْيَتَوَضَّأْ

Whoever holds his penis, let him perform wudu.

Five: touching unclean objects, such as urine, feces, and so on.

Six: vomiting and nosebleeds.

We can find this explanation in the hadith below:

From Aisha radiyallahu anha, that the Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alaihi wa sallam has said, “Whoever is exposed to vomiting, nosebleeds (blood coming from the nose), qalas (fluid that comes from the throat that fills the mouth or other things but it is not vomit) or madhiy, then he should perform wudu and then continue his prayer as long as he does not speak.” This hadith was narrated by Ibn Majah.

Those are the six things that break wudu. As Muslims, we must understand that.

Now, “does feeling sleeping break wudu?”

One important thing that you must understand beforehand is that there is a difference between sleeping and feeling asleep. We all know what sleep is. I won’t say much about it now. But feeling sleep is a sensory response to a condition. This condition is sleep. We may also say that “feeling asleep” is a doubt about a condition.

So, if we want to understand “does feeling sleeping break wudu?”, then, we must have one condition first to make it a belief. If we believe that we have slept, then feeling sleep spoils wudu. But if we are not sure that we have slept, then feeling sleep does not break the wudu.

That’s a brief explanation of “does feeling sleeping break wudu?”. As Muslims, we must understand that.

The second important thing about “do you have wudu if you fall asleep?” what I will explain now is “does sleeping break wudu?”. I want you to understand that because it is one of the important questions on the topic we are discussing now.

If we understand the six things that damage wudu as I explained earlier, then we understand that sleep is one of the things that destroys wudu. So, if someone asks you, “does sleeping brak wudu?”, then, the answer is “Yes. Sleep break wudu if it causes one to fart.” I’ll explain that in the next few paragraphs. So, if you have slept and you want to perform an act of worship that requires you to be in a pure state, then you must perform wudu.

That’s a brief explanation of “does sleeping break wudu?”. As Muslims, we must understand that.

Do You Have Wudu If You Fall Asleep?

The third important thing about “do you have wudu if you fall asleep?” which I will explain now is a specific answer to the topic we are discussing now. Actually, this question is similar to the previous question. And now, I’m going to explain that in more detail.

There is one important thing that I want to explain once again, that sleep that causes a person to fart is one of the things that destroys wudu. In general, such a sleeping position is lying down. Why? Because there’s nothing holding his ass from farting.

So, if we fall asleep, then we have to make sure whether we have farted or not. But it is a difficult thing because we lose consciousness when we are asleep. That’s why the only easy way to determine whether we fart or not when we’re asleep is to understand our sleeping position. If our sleeping position is lying down, then our wudu is broken. If we sleep sitting up, then we have to check whether we have farted or not. It must be done because sitting is one of the things that can hold a fart.

The fourth important thing about “do you have wudu if you fall asleep?” what I will explain now is “why does sleeping break wudu?”. I want you to understand that because it is one of the important questions on the topic we are discussing now.

Actually, there are two things “why does sleeping break wudu?”:

One: sleep is one of those things that causes a person to lose consciousness so he doesn’t know whether he has farted or not.

Two: there are many hadiths that explain that if a person is asleep, then he must perform wudu to remove minor hadas. Some of the hadiths I mean are as follows:

From Mu’awiyah radiyallahu anhu, he said, “The Messenger of Allah sallallhu alaihi wa sallam said, “The eye is the anal cord. If two eyes have slept then the string will be untied.” The hadith was narrated by Ahmad and ath-Thabrani. He (ath-Thabrani) added (the hadith editor), “Whoever has been sleeping, let him perform wudu.”

From Ali bin Thalq radliyallahu anhu, he said, “The Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) has said, “If one of you has emitted a soundless wind from his anus while praying, then let him go out and perform wudu, then repeat the prayer.” The hadith was narrated by five people (Ahmad, Abu Daud, at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa’i, Ibn Majah).

From Abu Hurairah radiyallahu anhu, he said, “The Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, “If one of you finds something in his stomach, then he doubts whether something has come out of him or not? So, he is not allowed to leave the mosque until he hears a sound or smells an aroma.” This hadith was narrated by Muslim.

That’s a brief explanation of “why does sleeping break wudu?”. As Muslims, we must understand that.

Does Light Sleeping Break the Wudhu?

The fifth important thing about “do you have wudu if you fall asleep?” what I will explain now is “does light sleeping break the wudhu?”. I want you to understand that because it is one of the important questions on the topic we are discussing now.

In the previous few paragraphs I have explained that sleep can cause a person to lose consciousness whether he has farted or not. That’s why he doesn’t have wudu or his wudu is broken if it’s done lying down. Likewise, light sleeping: light sleeping can break the wudu if it is done lying down.

That’s a brief explanation of “does light sleeping break the wudhu?”. As Muslims, we must understand that.

Does Sleeping in Car Break Wudu?

The sixth important thing about “do you have wudu if you fall asleep?” What I’m going to explain now is “does sleeping in car break wudu?”. I want you to understand that because it is one of the important questions on the topic we are discussing now.

One thing we have to understand about this question, and several other questions about sleep impairing wudu, is that sleeping in a sitting position does not impair wudu. So, if we sleep in the car with a sitting position, then it does not damage the wudu. But if we sleep in the car lying down, then it breaks the wudu.

That’s a brief explanation of “does sleeping in car break wudu?”. As Muslims, we must understand that.
