99 Names of Allah: for What?
The first important thing about “can you name your child after one of the 99 names of Allah?” what I will explain now is “99 names of Allah: for what?”. I want you to understand that first before you read more explanations in this article because that is the basic question about the 99 names of Allah in this discussion that should be well understood.
Discussion about “99 names of Allah: for what?” is a discussion of the functions of the 99 names of Allah. Of course, there are many functions of the names of Allah. Of course, I’m not going to explain all of that now. In this article, I will only explain some of its functions.
The functions of the names of Allah are as follows:
99 Names of Allah to Know Allah
The first function of the 99 names of Allah is to know Allah. I think that’s the most important function. The reason is because we will not know God if we do not know His attributes. We can know His attributes if we have known His names.
We can find a very clear explanation that one of the functions of the 99 names of Allah is to know Allah in the following verses of the Quran:
Say, “He is Allah, [who is] One Allah, the Eternal Refuge He neither begets nor is born Nor is there to Him any equivalent .” (Al-Ikhlas : 1-4).
We can also find this explanation in the following verses of the Quran:
He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed. He is the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him. He is Allah, the Creator, the Inventor, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise . (Al-Hasyr : 22-24).
99 Names of Allah for Dhikr
The second function of the 99 names of Allah is for dhikr or remember of Allah. There are two main reasons why I say so:
One: in the Quran there are many verses about the command to do dhikr or remember Allah. We can find these explanations (one of them) in the Quran below:
O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance. (Al-Ahzab : 41).
Two: the most important obligatory worship is prayer (salat). Specifically, Allah has commanded us to pray (salat) so that we remember Him or dhikr to Him. We can find this explanation in the Quran below:
Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance. (Thaha : 14).
99 Names of Allah As Wasilah in Dua
The third function of the 99 names of Allah is as wasilah in dua. The point is that we are strongly encouraged to recite some of the names of Allah in dua so that our duas will be answered.
We can find the explanation is the Quranic verse below:
And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names. They will be recompensed for what they have been doing. (Al-A’raf ; 180).
We can find examples of duas that make the name of Allah as wasilah in the hadith below:
From Abu Musa al-Ash’ari radliyallahu ‘anhu, he said, “The Messenger of Allah sallallaahu’ alaihi wa sallam said,” Whoever is afflicted with distress or sadness, then let him pray with these sentences, (he said), “O My god! I am your servant, the son of your male servant, the son of your female servant, in your grasp. My crown is in your power. Your decision applies to me. Your fair decision applies to me. I ask You with all Your names that You have used to call Your Essence, or that you have sent down in Your book, or that You have taught one of Your creatures, or that You have stored in occult knowledge by Your side, so that You make the Quran as the light of my chest, the conditioning of my heart, the removal of my sorrow and sorrow.”
That’s a brief explanation of “99 names of Allah: for what?”. As Muslims, we must understand that.
Can You Name Your Child After One of the 99 Names of Allah?
The second important thing about “can you name your child after one of the 99 names of Allah?” what I will explain now is a specific explanation. So, I really hope you read the explanation below very well.
In short, I would like to say that you can name your child with any of the 99 names of Allah on the condition that you must add the word “Abdu (عَبْدٌ) or Amat (أَمَةٌ)” in front of it. The meaning of the word “Abdu (عَبْدٌ)” is a male slave or male servant. While the meaning of the word “Amat (أَمَةٌ)” is a female slave or female servant.
So, for example, if you have a son and you want to name him with one of the 99 names of Allah, perhaps الخَالِقُ (God the Creator), then you should name him عَبْدُ الْخَالِقِ (Abdul Khaliq). It means male slaves of God the Creator or male servants of God the Creator.
If you have a daughter and you want to give her a name with one of the 99 names of Allah, maybe اللهُ (Allah), then you should give her the name أَمَةُ اللهِ (Amatullah). It means female slave of Allah or female servant Allah.
That’s a brief explanation of “can you name your child after one of the 99 names of Allah?” and some important things about it. Do you understand? If you want to ask, please ask!
I think that’s enough for this article. May be useful. Amen.
