What Is Hijab?

يٰٓاَيُّهَا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا لَا تَدْخُلُوْا بُيُوْتَ النَّبِيِّ اِلَّآ اَنْ يُّؤْذَنَ لَكُمْ اِلٰى طَعَامٍ غَيْرَ نٰظِرِيْنَ اِنٰىهُ وَلٰكِنْ اِذَا دُعِيْتُمْ فَادْخُلُوْا فَاِذَا طَعِمْتُمْ فَانْتَشِرُوْا وَلَا مُسْتَأْنِسِيْنَ لِحَدِيْثٍۗ اِنَّ ذٰلِكُمْ كَانَ يُؤْذِى النَّبِيَّ فَيَسْتَحْيٖ مِنْكُمْ ۖوَاللّٰهُ لَا يَسْتَحْيٖ مِنَ الْحَقِّۗ وَاِذَا سَاَلْتُمُوْهُنَّ مَتَاعًا فَسْـَٔلُوْهُنَّ مِنْ وَّرَاۤءِ حِجَابٍۗ ذٰلِكُمْ اَطْهَرُ لِقُلُوْبِكُمْ وَقُلُوْبِهِنَّۗ وَمَا كَانَ لَكُمْ اَنْ تُؤْذُوْا رَسُوْلَ اللّٰهِ وَلَآ اَنْ تَنْكِحُوْٓا اَزْوَاجَهٗ مِنْۢ بَعْدِهٖٓ اَبَدًاۗ اِنَّ ذٰلِكُمْ كَانَ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ عَظِيْمًا

O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted for a meal, without awaiting its readiness. But when you are invited, then enter; and when you have eaten, disperse without seeking to remain for conversation. Indeed, that [behavior] was troubling the Prophet, and he is shy of [dismissing] you. But Allah is not shy of the truth. And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts. And it is not [conceivable or lawful] for you to harm the Messenger of Allah or to marry his wives after him, ever. Indeed, that would be in the sight of Allah an enormity. (Al-Ahzab [33]; 53).

On the discussion about "what is hijab?" I have already explained that the hijab is something that gets in the way. In Islam, in general, hijab is understood as something that covers the nakedness of Muslims. In general, it relates to Muslim women.

So, in relation to Muslim women, the hijab is something that covers their aurat. Thus, it is clothing.

In general, in Islamic law, a woman's aurat is her entire body except the two palms and the face. While the aurat of men is the part of the body between the navel and the two knees.

In Islam, Muslim women are required to wear the hijab to cover their aurat. We can find an explanation of that in the two verses of the Quran below:

يٰٓاَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُلْ لِّاَزْوَاجِكَ وَبَنٰتِكَ وَنِسَاۤءِ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ يُدْنِيْنَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِنْ جَلَابِيْبِهِنَّۗ ذٰلِكَ اَدْنٰىٓ اَنْ يُّعْرَفْنَ فَلَا يُؤْذَيْنَۗ وَكَانَ اللّٰهُ غَفُوْرًا رَّحِيْمًا

O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful. (Al-Ahzab [33]; 59).

وَقُلْ لِّلْمُؤْمِنٰتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ اَبْصَارِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوْجَهُنَّ وَلَا يُبْدِيْنَ زِيْنَتَهُنَّ اِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلٰى جُيُوْبِهِنَّۖ وَلَا يُبْدِيْنَ زِيْنَتَهُنَّ اِلَّا لِبُعُوْلَتِهِنَّ اَوْ اٰبَاۤىِٕهِنَّ اَوْ اٰبَاۤءِ بُعُوْلَتِهِنَّ اَوْ اَبْنَاۤىِٕهِنَّ اَوْ اَبْنَاۤءِ بُعُوْلَتِهِنَّ اَوْ اِخْوَانِهِنَّ اَوْ بَنِيْٓ اِخْوَانِهِنَّ اَوْ بَنِيْٓ اَخَوٰتِهِنَّ اَوْ نِسَاۤىِٕهِنَّ اَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ اَيْمَانُهُنَّ اَوِ التّٰبِعِيْنَ غَيْرِ اُولِى الْاِرْبَةِ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ اَوِ الطِّفْلِ الَّذِيْنَ لَمْ يَظْهَرُوْا عَلٰى عَوْرٰتِ النِّسَاۤءِ ۖوَلَا يَضْرِبْنَ بِاَرْجُلِهِنَّ لِيُعْلَمَ مَا يُخْفِيْنَ مِنْ زِيْنَتِهِنَّۗ وَتُوْبُوْٓا اِلَى اللّٰهِ جَمِيْعًا اَيُّهَ الْمُؤْمِنُوْنَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُوْنَ

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed. (An-Nur [24]; 31).

In general, if we read some Islamic legal literature on hijab, then we will find an explanation that some of the benefits of wearing the hijab for Muslim women are as follows:

  • Wearing the hijab is one of the proofs of obedience to Allah.

  • Wearing the hijab can minimize sexual harassment.
  • Wearing the hijab can motivate Muslims to worship.

One important thing that you must understand is that the discussion about "at what age do Muslim wear hijab?" related to the minimum age a Muslim must pray (salat). In general, we understand that Muslims should pray when they are adults (baligh). But the discussion of "hijab" which is our topic today is analogous to the command to teach young children to pray (salat).

If we read the Islamic legal literature on the commandment to teach young children to pray (salat), then we will find several hadiths that explain that parents should teach their children to pray (salat) at the age of seven. And they were ordered to beat their children who did not pray (salat) at the age of ten.

Some of the hadiths I mean are as follows:

عَنْ عَمْرُو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيْهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : مُرُوْا أَوْلَادَكُمْ بِالصَّلَاةِ وَهُمْ أَبْنَاءُ سَبْعِ سِنِيْنَ ، وَاضْرِبُوْهُمْ عَلَيْهَا ، وَهُمْ أَبْنَاءُ عَشْرٍ ، وَفَرِّقُوا بَيْنَهُمْ فِيْ الْمَضَاجِعِ

From Amru bin Shuaib, from his father, from his grandfather radliyallahu anhu, he said, "The Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, "Order your children to pray (salat) when they are seven years old. Hit them if they do not pray (salat) when they are ten years old. And separate their beds."

وَعَنْ أَبِيْ ثَرِيَّةَ سَبْرَةَ بْنِ مَعْبَدٍ الَجَهْنِيِّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : عَلِّمُوْا الصَّبِيَّ الصَّلَاةَ لِسَبْعِ سِنِينَ ، وَاضْرِبُوْهُ عَلَيْهَا ابْنَ عَشْرِ سِنِينَ

From Abu Tsariyyah, Sabrah bin Ma'bad al-Jahni radliyallahu anhu, he said, "The Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, "Teach children to pray (salat) when they are seven years old and beat them if they do not pray (salat) by the time they are ten."

So, if we compare the minimum age for Muslims to wear the hijab when it comes to teaching children to pray (salat), we can conclude that Muslims are encouraged to wear the hijab at the age of 7 years. That's the answer.
