Specifically, I will cover the following key points about the Dua when someone passes away in Islam. Let's dive into the details!

The Meaning of the Dua When Someone Passes Away in Islam

The first key point is understanding the meaning of the Dua for someone who has passed away.

In Islam, this Dua is a prayer made for the deceased, asking Allah for His mercy, protection, and forgiveness. The primary goal is to seek Allah's blessings for the departed soul, asking Him to forgive their sins, ease their journey in the hereafter, and grant them goodness in the grave.

This is what differentiates Duas for the deceased from those made for the living.

Reasons Why the Dua When Someone Passes Away Is Important

The second important point is understanding why making Dua for someone who has passed away is essential.

Islamic literature provides many reasons why this Dua holds great significance. Below are the two most important reasons:

All Deeds Cease After Death

One of the reasons is found in the following hadith:

Translation:

From Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "When a person dies, all their deeds come to an end except three: ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them." (Narrated by Muslim)

This highlights the importance of praying for the deceased, as it continues to benefit them even after their deeds have ceased.

Protection from Punishment in the Grave

Many ahadith describe the torment that sinners may face in their graves. Below are two examples:

Translation:

"When one of you dies, their place will be shown to them morning and evening. If they are destined for Paradise, they will see their place in Paradise. If destined for Hell, they will see their place in Hell. It will be said, 'This is your place until Allah resurrects you on the Day of Judgment.'"

Translation:

"If you were not burying your dead, I would ask Allah to let you hear the torment of the grave."

These ahadith emphasize the importance of praying for the deceased to protect them from punishment in the grave.
