What Is Islam in Simple Words?

The first important point regarding the general steps to convert to Islam in South Africa that I will describe now is: "What is Islam in simple words?" I want you to understand this first before diving deeper into the explanations in this article, as it is a fundamental question that must be properly recognized.

Easy Ways to Convince a Christian to Convert to Islam

In general, many people understand that Islam is the final divine religion. By "divine religion," I mean a faith that originates from God (Allah). Islam was conveyed by Prophet Muhammad as the final Prophet and Messenger of Allah.

That understanding is correct. You are not wrong if you define Islam in simple words as explained in the paragraph above. However, there are some other simple points that can help you understand Islam more clearly.

We can find an explanation of these simple points in the following hadith:

From Umar bin Khattab (رضي الله عنه), he said: "While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad SAW) one day, a man suddenly appeared before us wearing extremely white clothes and having very black hair. There were no signs of travel on him, and none of us recognized him. He came close to the Prophet SAW, sat down in front of him, rested his knees against the Prophet's knees, and placed his hands on his thighs. Then he asked, 'O Muhammad, tell me about Islam: What is Islam?' The Prophet SAW replied, '(Islam is) to bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish prayer, to give zakat, to fast in Ramadan, and to perform Hajj if you are able to do so.'" (The hadith continues.)

The Five Pillars of Islam

From the hadith above, we can conclude that Islam in simple words consists of the following five fundamental pillars:

  1. Bearing witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
  2. Performing the five daily prayers (Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha).
  3. Paying zakat for eligible Muslims.
  4. Fasting in the month of Ramadan.
  5. Performing Hajj for those who are physically and financially capable.

These five points are the five pillars of Islam, as also mentioned in the following hadith:

From Abdullah bin Umar (رضي الله عنهما), he said: "The Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad SAW) said: 'Islam is built upon five things: bearing witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger, establishing prayer, paying zakat, fasting in Ramadan, and performing Hajj.'"

Is Converting to Islam a Good Choice?

The second important point regarding the general steps to convert to Islam in South Africa is: "Is converting to Islam a good choice?"

In short, Islam is a great religion for two main reasons:

  • Islam guarantees happiness in this world and the hereafter for those who sincerely follow its teachings.
  • The authenticity of Islam's primary sources (the Quran and Hadith) has been preserved throughout history.

Therefore, if you ask, "Is converting to Islam a good choice?" the answer is: Absolutely! Islam is the best path to truth and spiritual fulfillment.
