What Is Islam in Simple Words?

The first important point regarding easy procedures to convert to Islam in Mauritius that I will describe now is "What is Islam in simple words?" I want you to understand this first before exploring more explanations in this article because it is a fundamental question that must be understood properly.

Easy Ways to Convince a Christian to Convert to Islam

In general, many people understand that Islam is the final divine religion. What I mean by a divine religion is that it originates from God (Allah). Islam was conveyed by Prophet Muhammad as the last Prophet and Messenger of Allah.

That is correct. You are not mistaken if you understand Islam in simple terms as explained in the paragraph above. However, there are some other simple aspects that can further clarify what Islam is.

We can find an explanation of these aspects in the hadith below:

From Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:

"While we were sitting with Allah's Messenger (Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him) one day, suddenly a man with very white clothes and very black hair came to us. We did not see any signs of travel on him, and none of us knew him. He sat close to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), rested his knees against his knees, and placed his hands on his thighs. Then he said, 'O Muhammad, tell me about Islam. What is Islam?' The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, '(Islam is) to bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish prayer, to give zakat, to fast during Ramadan, and to perform Hajj if you are able to do so.'" (The hadith continues.)

My best friend! If we analyze the hadith above, we can conclude that Islam in simple words consists of the following:

  • Bearing witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger.
  • Performing the five daily prayers (Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha).
  • Paying Zakat (for those required to do so).
  • Fasting during the month of Ramadan.
  • Performing Hajj (for those who are able).

These five points form the Five Pillars of Islam. This explanation is reinforced by the hadith below:

From Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), he said:

"The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, 'Islam is built upon five things: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger, performing prayer, giving zakat, fasting during Ramadan, and making the pilgrimage to the House (Hajj).'

That is a brief explanation of "What is Islam in simple words?" As Muslims, we must understand this.
