عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُوْلِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ إِذَ طَلَعَ عَلَيْنَا رَجُلٌ شَدِيْدُ بَيَاضِ الثِّيَابِ شَدِيْدُ سَوَادِ الشَّعْرِ ، لَا نَرَى عَلَيْهِ أَثَرَ السَّفَرِ وَلَا نَعْرِفُهُ ، حَتَّى جَلَسَ إِلَى رَسُوْلِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَسْنَدَ رُكْبَتَهُ إِلَى رُكْبَتِهِ وَوَضَعَ كَفَّيْهِ عَلَى فَخْذِهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ : يَا مُحَمَّدُ أَخْبِرْنِيْ عَنِ الْإِسْلَامِ ، مَا الْإِسْلَامُ ؟ قَالَ : أَنْ تَشْهَدَ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إلَّا اللهَ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُوْلُ اللهِ وَتُقِيْمَ الصَّلَاةِ وُتُؤْتِيَ الزَّكَاةَ وَتَصُوْمَ رَمَضَانَ وَتَحُجَّ الْبَيْتَ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيْلًا. قَالَ : صَدَقْتَ

From Umar bin Khattab (radliyallahu anhu), he said, "While we were with Allah's Messenger (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alaihi wa sallam one day, a man with extremely white clothes and very black hair suddenly appeared. We did not see any signs of travel on him, nor did we recognize him. He then sat close to the Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, placed his knees against his (Prophet Muhammad’s) knees, and put his hands on his (Prophet Muhammad’s) thighs. He then asked, 'O Muhammad, tell me about Islam. What is Islam?' The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, 'Islam is to testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish prayer, to pay zakat, to fast in Ramadan, and to perform Hajj if you are able to do so.'"

Five Pillars of Islam

Fasting during the month of Ramadan.

These five principles are known as the Five Pillars of Islam, as mentioned in the following hadith:

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : بُنِيَ الْإِسْلَامُ عَلَى خَمْسٍ : شَهَادَةِ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُوْلُ اللهِ , وَإِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ , وَإِيْتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ , وَصَوْمِ رَمَضَانَ , وَحَجِّ الْبَيْتِ

From Abdullah bin Umar (radliyallahu anhuma), he said, "The Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, 'Islam is built upon five things: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, giving zakat, fasting in Ramadan, and performing Hajj.'"

Is Converting to Islam Permissible?
