Hadith About Praying Dhuhr Twice
The hadith concerning praying Dhuhr twice is as follows:
Translation:
From Yazid bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him): He prayed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when two men who had not prayed joined them. The Prophet called for them, and when they approached, their bodies trembled. The Prophet asked them, "What prevented you from praying with us?" They replied, "We already prayed during our journey." The Prophet said, "Do not do so (in the future). If you have prayed on your journey and then find an imam who has not yet prayed, pray with him, for it will count as a voluntary prayer for you." (Narrated by Ahmad)
Key Points from the Hadith
Several important lessons can be derived from this hadith:
- The hadith demonstrates the great authority of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
- It teaches us to inquire and understand the reasons behind others' actions when they differ from ours.
- The hadith highlights the Prophet's concern for people's understanding and proper practice of prayer.
- It establishes that obligatory prayers can be performed individually and outside of the mosque.
- It recommends repeating a prayer with others if you have already performed it alone. For example:
- If you have prayed Dhuhr alone and later encounter others performing Dhuhr, it is recommended to join them.
- The first Dhuhr prayer you performed is considered obligatory, while the second Dhuhr prayer with others becomes voluntary (nafl).
Scholarly Opinions on Repeating Prayers
Islamic scholars differ regarding the fifth point:
- Abu Hanifah: Repeating prayers applies only to Maghrib and Fajr.
- Ash-Shafi'i: Repetition is permissible for all prayers.
- Malik: If one has already prayed in congregation, repeating the prayer is not necessary.
