Prayer Before Sex in Islam ~ Hi readers! Sex is a normal and natural activity for married couples, and it is the only means of having children. In Islamic teachings, there are many aspects to consider, one of which is the prayer before engaging in this intimate act.

Why Is Prayer Before Sex Important in Islam?

Before a husband and wife have sex, they are encouraged to recite a prayer. This prayer serves as a means to protect their child, should they conceive, from the harmful effects of Satan. The prayer ensures that Satan will not interfere with the child's well-being.

What is the Prayer Before Sex?

Let's dive into the prayer before sex with reference to an important hadith:

Hadith About Prayer Before Sex

The prayer before sex is highlighted in a hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), which states:

From Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), he said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, 'If one of you approaches his family, let him say, "O Allah, keep us from Satan and keep Satan away from what You have provided for us." If they have a child as a result, Satan will never harm the child.' This hadith is agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.

Can a Husband Drink Breast Milk of Wife in Islam?

This hadith emphasizes the significance of reciting a prayer before engaging in intimacy, ensuring that if a child is conceived, they will be protected from harm.

The Prayer Before Sex:

The prayer mentioned in the hadith is as follows:

"O Allah, keep us from Satan and keep Satan away from what You have provided for us."

This prayer is not just beneficial for the couple but also for the child, as it guarantees the child's protection from any harm by Satan.

Link to Quranic Teachings

This prayer aligns with a verse from the Quran that tells of the mother of Maryam (Mary), who invoked Allah's protection for her child and her offspring from Satan:

"So, when she gave birth, she said, 'My Lord, I have delivered a female,' and Allah knew best what she had delivered, and the male is not like the female. And I have named her Maryam, and I seek refuge for her and her offspring in You from the accursed Satan.'" (Ali 'Imran [3:36])

This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking refuge in Allah from Satan, something also reflected in the prayer before sex.

Imam Al-Ghazali's Advice

Imam al-Ghazali also recommends that couples recite a prayer before having sex. In addition to the above prayer, Imam al-Ghazali suggests that the couple first recite the Basmalah (بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ), Takbir (اللهُ أَكْبَرُ), and Tahlil (لَا إِلَهَ إِلّا اللهُ). Afterward, they should recite this supplication:

"In the name of Allah, the Most High, the Most Glorious. O Allah, make this offspring good, if You have decreed that a child will emerge from my loins."

This additional prayer ensures the couple's intimacy is blessed and that any child conceived will be pure and good.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the prayer before sex is a practice in Islam that brings blessings and protection to both the parents and their child. It is a simple but powerful way to seek Allah's help and protection from Satan during this intimate act. As Muslims, it is important to remember the value of such prayers and incorporate them into our daily lives for spiritual protection and guidance.
