Hi all readers! Are you looking for an explanation about “is it haram to shower naked?”? If your answer is “Yes”, congratulations! Now you are reading the right article. Why? Because that is what I will explain in this article. As Muslims, we must understand that. So, you have to read it to the end.

Specifically, there are three important points about “is it haram to shower naked?” which I will explain in this article. The three important things I mean are as follows:

Why is the Explanation of Shower Naked in Islam Important?

The first important thing about “is it haram to shower naked?” What I will explain now is "why is the explanation of shower naked in Islam important?". I want you to understand that before you read any more explanations in this article. My goal is for you to understand the urgency of this discussion.

One general thing that I remind you of is that showering is a normal activity (in some cases showering is an obligation for Muslims) to cleanse the body. In general, someone who is going to take a bath takes off his clothes so he doesn't get wet because of the water.

On the other hand, there is a Muslim who is embarrassed if he has to take off his clothes even though he is alone. What it means is that he doesn't want to reveal his nakedness even though no one else sees him.

In Islam, under some conditions, Muslims are required to cover their aurat, such as when they are praying, reading the Quran, meeting other people (except when meeting their mahram). In fact, in some conditions, they are encouraged to always cover their aurat so that they do not see their aurat.

The question is, if Muslims bathe alone in a room, can they bathe naked?

So, specifically, I want to say that there are two basic things about shower naked that we should understand very well:

  • The recommendation to cover the aurat.
  • Shower naked; open nakedness.

So, if you ask me, "Why is the explanation of shower naked in Islam important?", then the answer is because it is one of the ethics of shower in Islam. For this reason, Muslims must understand that.

Ethics of Shower in Islam

The second important thing about “is it haram to shower naked?” what I will explain here is the ethics of shower in Islam. I want you to understand that so you understand what I can do in the bathroom and what I can't do in the bathroom.

One important thing about ethics of shower in Islam that I want to say here before I explain a lot about it, is that there are many ethics of shower in Islam. What I will explain here are general ethics that must be understood by Muslims who are going to take a bath and who are taking a bath.

Specifically, there are four ethics of shower in Islam which I will explain:

Praying before entering the bathroom

Praying before entering the bathroom is one of the ethics of shower in Islam. The point is that it is one of the suggestions in Islam. We can find an explanation of that in the hadith below:

عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ ؛ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا دَخَلَ الْخَلَاءَ قَالَ ؛ اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَباِئِثِ . أَخْرَجَهُ السَّبْعَةُ

From Anas radliyallahu anhu, he said, "When the Prophet (Muhammad) was going to enter the bathroom, he prayed, "O Lord, I seek refuge in You from male and female demons.” The hadith was narrated by seven people (Ahmad, al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Daud, at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah).

Not carrying anything related to the "name" of Allah

Not bringing anything related to the "name" of Allah is one of the ethics of shower in Islam. The point is that a Muslim is strictly prohibited from bringing anything related to the "name" of Allah, such as paper on which "name" of Allah is written, etc., into the bathroom. We can find this explanation in the hadith below:

عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : كَانَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا دَخَلَ الْخَلَاءَ وَضَعَ خَاتَمَهُ . أَخْرَجَهُ الْأَرْبَعَةُ

From Anas radliyallahu anhu, he said, "If the Messenger of Allah (prophet Muhammad) was going to enter the bathroom, then he put his ring." The hadith was narrated by four people (Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah).

Washing the right side of the body first

Washing the right side of the body first is one of the ethics of shower in Islam. The point is that Muslims who are bathing are encouraged to wash the right side of their body first before they wash the left side of their body. We can find this explanation in the hadith below:

From Aisha radliyallahu anha, she said, "Verily the Messenger of Allah (prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam likes to prioritize the right side of the body when he wears sandals, when he combs his hair, when he performs ablution, and in all his affairs." This hadith was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.

Covering aurat (the genitals)

Covering aurat (the genitals) is one of the ethics of shower in Islam. The point is that Muslims who are showering are encouraged to cover their aurat (the genitals). We can find this explanation in the hadith below:

Muawiyah bin Haidah said, "O Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad), regarding our aurat, what can we show and what we should not show?" He said, "Keep your nakedness (so that it is not exposed) except from your wife or your slave." Muawiyah bin Haidah said, "I said, "O Messenger of Allah, what if someone is with other people (who see each other)." He said, "If you can keep it from being seen, then do it." I (Muawiyah bin Haidah" said, "What if someone is alone?" He said, "One is more obliged to feel ashamed of Allah."

That's a brief explanation of the ethics of shower in Islam. As Muslims, we must understand that.

Is It Haram to Shower Naked?

The third important point about “is it haram to shower naked?” what I'm going to explain now is a specific answer. In the previous discussion I have explained four ethics of shower in Islam. Of course, now we understand the question "is it haram to shower naked?" relates to the fourth ethic: covering aurat.

One important thing I want to say before I explain the specific answer, is that covering the aurat when a Muslim is alone, including when he is taking a bath, is a recommendation. The point is that he is recommended to cover the aurat. So, it is a recommendation, not an obligation. I personally haven't found a specific explanation that explains that it is an obligation. In other words, a Muslim may open his aurat, but he is advised to close it when he is showering.

So, specifically I would say, that showering naked is not haram in Islam. That is, one can do that.

That's a brief explanation of "is it haram to shower naked?". Do you understand? If you want to ask, please ask!

I think that's enough for this article. May be useful. Amen.

See you again in the next article!
