Meaning of "Haram to Not Get Married"

The first key aspect of "Is it haram to not get married?" is understanding the meaning of "not getting married." I want you to grasp this so you can fully comprehend our discussion.

The Benefits of Marrying a Divorced Woman in Islam

If we analyze the phrase "it is haram to not get married," there are two important points to understand:

Meaning of Haram

The word "haram" in Arabic means forbidden. We can find an explanation of this in the following Quranic verse:

"… Verily, Allah has forbidden both of them to the disbelievers." (Al-A'raf: 50)

In Islamic legal terminology, "haram" has two meanings:

Something that Shari' (Allah and the Prophet Muhammad) has strictly prohibited.

Something that, if avoided, earns a reward, and if committed, results in punishment.

Meaning of Not Getting Married

The meaning of "not getting married" is simply that a person chooses to remain single. In general, when someone says "it is haram to not get married," they are implying that not marrying is prohibited in Islam. However, if someone asks, "Is it haram to not get married?" they are seeking clarification on whether remaining single is allowed in Islam.

That is a brief explanation of the meaning of "haram to not get married" that we must understand.

Quran and Hadith About Marriage

The second key aspect of "Is it haram to not get married?" is understanding what the Quran and hadith say about marriage. The following verses and hadith emphasize the importance of marriage:

"And marry those among you who are single and those who are fit among your male and female slaves. If they are needy, Allah will make them free from want out of His grace. And Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing." (An-Nur [24]: 32)

From Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), he said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to us: 'O young people! Whoever among you is able to marry, let him do so, for it helps lower the gaze and protects chastity. But whoever cannot afford it, let him fast, for it will be a shield for him.'"

"There are four practices from the Sunnah of the Messengers: modesty, applying perfume, using siwak, and getting married."

These verses and hadith highlight the significance of marriage in Islam.

Is It Haram to Not Get Married?

The third key aspect of "Is it haram to not get married?" is the specific answer to whether Islam forbids Muslims from remaining single.

Dear readers, if we analyze the Quran and hadith about marriage, we understand that Islam encourages Muslims to marry. However, we must also recognize that this encouragement is a recommendation, not an obligation. This means that marriage is highly recommended in Islam, but it is not compulsory. Therefore, if a Muslim chooses not to marry, they are not committing a sin.

So, the clear answer is: Not getting married is not haram in Islam.
