Some Things That Break Wudu According to Islamic Law

The important aspect about "Does holding in a fart break wudu?" that I will explain now involves some things that break wudu according to Islamic law. I want you to understand all of this before you read further explanations in this article because these are fundamental concepts that should be well understood.

In general, if we read some Islamic legal literature on wudu, we will find an explanation that there are five things that can break wudu:

  • If something comes out of the two holes: the front hole (penis and vagina) and the back hole (anus).

We can find this explanation in the Quran below:

O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of janabah, then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted a woman and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful. (Al-Maidah: 6).

  • Loss of mind due to sleep, madness, and so on.

We can find this explanation in the hadith below:

From Muawiyah radiyallahu anhu, he said, "The Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, 'The eye is the anal cord. If the eyes have slept, then the string will be untied.' The hadith was narrated by Ahmad and at-Tabarani. He (at-Tabarani) added, 'Whoever has slept, let him perform wudu.'

  • If the skin of a man and a woman who are not mahram touches each other without a barrier.

We can find this explanation in the following Quranic verse:

Or you touch a woman. (Al-Maidah: 6).

  • Touching the human penis, vagina, or anus using the palms of the hands or the inside of the fingers.

We can find this explanation in the hadith below:

Whoever touches his penis, let him perform wudu.

We can find this explanation in the hadith below:

From Aisha radiyallahu anha, that the Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, 'Whoever experiences vomiting, nosebleeds (blood coming from the nose), qalas (fluid from the throat that fills the mouth or other things but is not vomit), or madhiy, then he should perform wudu and continue his prayer as long as he does not speak.' This hadith was narrated by Ibn Majah.

That is a brief explanation of some things that break wudu according to Islamic law. As Muslims, we must understand that.

Fart Break Wudu: Why?

The important point about "Does holding in a fart break wudu?" that I will explain now is "Fart breaks wudu: why?". I want you to understand this because it is an important question in this discussion that must be well understood. Additionally, some Muslims do not fully understand this topic.

In short, I would like to say that there are three reasons why farting breaks wudu. The three reasons are as follows:

Fart is one of those things that comes out of the back hole (anus or الدُّبُرُ)

The first reason why farting breaks wudu is quite obvious. Farting is one of the things that comes out of the back hole (anus or الدُّبُرُ). I have explained this in the previous paragraphs.

The hadith that explains that farting is one of the things that breaks wudu

There are many hadiths about farting. Some examples are as follows:

From Abu Hurairah radiyallahu anhu, he said, "The Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, 'If one of you feels something in his stomach and is unsure whether something has come out or not, he should not leave the mosque until he hears a sound or detects a smell.' This hadith was narrated by Muslim.

From Ali bin Thalq radiyallahu anhu, he said, "The Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, 'If one of you passes gas silently during prayer, he should leave, perform wudu, and then repeat the prayer.' This hadith was narrated by five people (Ahmad, Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah).

From 'Abbad bin Tamim, from his uncle, that a man complained to the Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam about feeling something during prayer. The Prophet replied, "He should not move or leave until he hears a sound or detects a smell."

If a Muslim has farted, he has a small hadas

We can find an explanation that farting is one of the things that causes Muslims to have a small hadas in the hadith below:

From Abu Hurairah radiyallahu anhu, that the Messenger of Allah (Prophet Muhammad) sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, "Allah does not accept the prayer of any one of you if he has hadas (small impurity) until he performs wudu." This hadith was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.

That's a brief explanation of "Fart breaks wudu: why?". As Muslims, we must understand this concept.

Does Holding in a Fart Break Wudu?

The important point about "Does holding in a fart break wudu?" that I'm going to explain now is a specific answer. So, I hope you read the explanation below carefully.

In short, if you ask me, "Does holding in a fart break wudu?", the answer is "No. Holding in a fart doesn't break wudu." The simplest reason is that holding in a fart is not the same as actually farting. When we fart, gas comes out of our anus. Meanwhile, when we hold in a fart, no gas escapes from our anus. That's the answer.

Conclusion

In conclusion, understanding whether holding in a fart breaks wudu is essential for maintaining our ritual purity and adherence to Islamic practices. We've explored various aspects of what breaks wudu according to Islamic law and the specific reasons why farting affects wudu. The key takeaway is that holding in a fart does not break wudu because it doesn't involve the release of gas. I hope this article has clarified your doubts and provided valuable insights into this topic. Should you have further questions or need more information, feel free to ask. Perfect! Holding in fart does not invalidate wudu. Wudu is only invalidated if we actually fart, not just by holding it in. Agreed!

Informative content!
