Can You Do Tayammum with Makeup? ~ Hi all readers! In a previous article, I explained wudu with makeup. There are several important aspects about it that must be understood by Muslims, especially Muslim women. In this article, I will explain Tayammum with makeup. This explanation is closely related to the previous discussion. Therefore, as Muslims, we must understand it.

As we know, Tayammum is a solution to purify oneself when there is no water available for wudu or ghusl Janabah. That's one of the reasons why you should read this article until the end.

Specifically, there are some important things about Tayammum with makeup that I will explain in this article. Some important things are as follows:

Meaning of Tayammum with Makeup

The important thing about Tayammum with makeup, or what I will explain here, is the meaning of Tayammum with makeup. The goal is to ensure you do not misunderstand the term and what is explained in this article.

You should know that what is meant by tayammum with makeup in this article is performing tayammum while you have makeup on your body, such as powder, lipstick, henna, and so on. Therefore, Tayammum with makeup in this article does not refer to using makeup for Tayammum. Why is that? The answer is that the only substance that can be used for Tayammum is clean dust, which is holy and can be used to purify something or someone.

Effect of Makeup on Tayammum

The important thing about Tayammum with makeup that I will explain here is the effect of makeup on Tayammum. For me, this explanation is very important because there are certain types of makeup that must be removed before a Muslim performs Tayammum, and there are certain types of makeup that may not need to be removed.

In a previous article, I explained that there are two types of makeup:

Makeup that has thickness and forms layers

Makeup that has thickness and forms layers must be removed before a Muslim performs Tayammum. The reason is that such makeup prevents dust from reaching the skin.

Makeup that has no thickness and doesn't form a layer

Makeup that does not have thickness and does not form a layer may not need to be removed before a Muslim performs Tayammum. The reason is that this type of makeup does not block dust from reaching the skin.

You might now be wondering, “Why does thick, layered makeup have to be removed before Tayammum?” The answer is that a Muslim must ensure that the dust used for Tayammum reaches the skin.

Obligations in Tayammum

You may now ask, "Why is there an explanation of the obligations in Tayammum included in the discussion of Tayammum with makeup?" I intentionally want to discuss the obligations in Tayammum in this article. My reason is to ensure that you have a complete understanding after reading this article.

If we review Islamic legal texts on Tayammum, we find that there are two obligations in Tayammum:

  1. Wipe the face with holy dust.
  2. Wipe the hands up to the elbows with holy dust.

These are the two obligations in Tayammum, and Muslims must understand them.

Steps to Tayammum with Makeup

Now I will explain the steps to perform Tayammum with makeup. Actually, the discussion about this is the same as the discussion about the steps for performing Tayammum in general. What I mean is that you should wipe the dust on the face and the two hands up to the elbows.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Tayammum with makeup involves specific considerations to ensure proper purification. Tayammum is a method of purifying oneself when water is unavailable, and it requires using clean dust. It is crucial to understand that Tayammum with makeup refers to performing Tayammum while makeup is on the skin, not using makeup for Tayammum. Thick, layered makeup must be removed as it obstructs dust from reaching the skin, while thin, non-layered makeup generally does not need to be removed. The two main obligations in Tayammum are to wipe the face and the hands up to the elbows with holy dust. By following these guidelines, Muslims can ensure their Tayammum is performed correctly, even with makeup on. Understanding these aspects helps maintain proper purification practices and ensures compliance with Islamic teachings. I hope this article clarifies these important points and proves useful. Amen.
